What your tongue says about your health

The tongue is not just essential for taste and speech; it’s also a reliable indicator of overall health. Changes in its color, texture, or coating can point to nutritional deficiencies, infections, or systemic diseases. For centuries, traditional medicine systems have used tongue diagnosis to detect internal imbalances. Today, it remains a valuable, non-invasive diagnostic tool.
Let us examine a few external signs that your tongue can give regarding your health:

2/7

A visible signal

The tongue color may indicate underlying medical conditions. A healthy tongue should be pink. White tongues can indicate poor blood supply or anemia, red or dark tongues may indicate fever or lack of vitamins, purple or blue tongues can indicate heart or lung problems, and yellowish tongues can indicate liver or bile duct disease.

3/7

What's covering the surface, coating

White coating is normal, but thicker, it may be a sign of digestive problems, oral thrush, or dehydration. Yellow coating indicates infection or liver impairment. Coating-free tongue, often glossy in appearance, could be a sign of nutritional deficiencies or overheating in the body. Observing the coating on the tongue identifies imbalances early on.

4/7

Texture

A smooth, shiny tongue can indicate a deficiency of vitamin B12 or iron. Fissures or cracks can indicate dehydration or geographic tongue. When the tongue is swollen, allergies or underactive thyroid can be its cause. These texture alterations usually come with other symptoms and may give an early indication of systemic health problems.

5/7

Shape

An oversized tongue with scalloped margins, frequently exhibiting tooth impressions, is associated with sleep disorders, anxiety, or water retention. A spindly or atrophied tongue might indicate dehydration or blood insufficiency. A shaky tongue is a symptom of fatigue, tension, or nervous system imbalance.

6/7

When to see a doctor?

Some tongue signs can only be treated by a doctor. Persistent white patches that do not scrape off can be leukoplakia, a precancerous lesion. Continuous redness or soreness can indicate oral cancer or infection. Burning pain with no observable signs can signal nerve damage or a lack of nutrition.

7/7

Keep your tongue healthy

Healthy tongue care is part of good oral hygiene, drinking plenty of water, and consuming a balanced diet with essential nutrients. Check your tongue regularly for discoloration or sensation changes. Changes on the tongue may indicate underlying health problems. Seek medical attention for ongoing symptoms; your tongue could be speaking volumes.
