What your bowel movement indicates about your health

What your bowel movement indicates about your health

Your body gives you many cues that something is wrong, and one of the most underrated of these indicators is your bowel movement. The shape, color, consistency, and frequency of your stool can provide valuable information about your digestive health and occasionally hint at more profound medical conditions. While everyone's routine varies slightly, knowing what is typical for you and being aware of sudden or new changes is essential to early intervention.
Here are some common indicators that shouldn't be overlooked.

2/8

Frequency and routine

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to frequency. For some people, three times a day is standard; for some, three times a week is the norm. The issue begins when there's an abrupt change from your normal routine. Run-of-the-mill frequent visits to the toilet could be an indication of issues such as irritable bowel syndrome, infection, or even anxiety. Conversely, less frequent stools may indicate constipation due to dehydration, low fiber, or other underlying issues.

3/8

Stool consistency

The texture and consistency of your stool say a great deal about how your digestive system is working. Your stool should be easy to pass, formed, and soft—usually likened to a smooth sausage. Hard, lumpy stools can indicate constipation, and loose or watery ones indicate diarrhea. A stool that is frequently in a different form without there being a corresponding change in diet may need to go through a medical examination.

4/8

Color is a gigantic clue

Stool color is mostly determined by the food you consume, but some colors may indicate internal issues. Healthy and normal is brown due to bile secreted by your liver. Green-colored stool can be due to consuming leafy foods or due to quick digestion. A black, tarry stool may indicate bleeding in the upper part of the digestive system, whereas red streaks can be due to hemorrhoids or lower gastrointestinal bleeding. Pale or clay-colored stool may indicate liver or bile duct issues and must not be overlooked.

5/8

Smell and sensation

Though it is natural for stool to be smelly, a very foul odor—particularly if it is greasy and affecting bowel habits, may indicate malabsorption, as seen with diseases like celiac disease or lactose intolerance. Abdominal pain or straining with bowel movements, urgency, or feeling of not quite emptying may also suggest problems in the rectum or pelvic floor dysfunction.

6/8

When to be concerned

Any ongoing alteration in your bowel movements—particularly if also associated with weight loss, tiredness, bloody stools, or pain in the abdomen—should not be ignored. Such conditions as colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or infection can start with very subtle symptoms that build up over time. The sooner such conditions are diagnosed and treated, the better. Keeping track of your bathroom behavior can be the starting point for finding out something serious.

7/8

Talk to your doctor

Consult a doctor if your bowel movement isn't normal.

8/8

Diet

Incorporate a healthy diet, especially rich in fibre.
