Magnesium deficiency symptoms in women

Magnesium is crucial for various body functions. It is a cofactor in more than 6000 enzymes that perform various biochemical functions in the body. Women in particular have numerous life phases where they risk developing a deficiency of the mineral. When this happens, some subtle signs may develop with your body warning you about the low levels of it. While it can present itself in different ways, it mainly affects the neuromuscular system and heart. Below, find common magnesium deficiency signs that you should be on the lookout for.

What causes magnesium deficiency in women?

Hypomagnesemia or magnesium deficiency occurs when you have low levels of magnesium in your blood. Women often tend to develop hypomagnesemia due to the different physiological changes they go through in their lifetime. From hormonal fluctuations during menstruation, pregnancy or menopause to breastfeeding all phases lead to a disruption in the magnesium balance within the body. Other health factors such as poor diet, gastrointestinal problems, chronic stress, kidney issues and more can also be the cause.

3/11

Muscle cramps and spasms

Magnesium regulates the contraction and relaxation of the muscles by controlling the influx of calcium into them. A low amount of it will disturb the electrolyte balance, calcium flow regulation and nerve signal transmission, thus causing more cramps, twitches and spasms.

4/11

Improper sleep

Magnesium supplements have been all the rage for a good night's sleep. It controls the neurotransmitters for sleep, relaxing the brain and body. Moreover, it controls the hormone melatonin which regulates the cycle of sleep in your body. Thus, insufficient amounts of magnesium can keep the brain more vigilant, leading to restless sleep and a restless day.

5/11

Worsening menstrual symptoms

Magnesium plays a role in the severity of premenstrual symptoms. It plays a vital role in hormone regulation during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Therefore, it can elevate the intensity of pre-menstrual symptoms such as cramps, bloating, breast tenderness, mood swings, food cravings or water retention. Also See: Magnesium Deficiency: Feel unmotivated, distracted and sad? 6/11

Anxiety and depression

Magnesium is vital in controlling the neurological system and regulating brain function. It aids in the regulation of neurotransmitters that affect a person's anxiety or calmness, including serotonin and GABA. A deficiency of the mineral can result in unexplained stress, moodiness, anxiety and even symptoms of depression.

7/11

Frequent headaches

Frequent headaches or migraines can also be signals of hypomagnesemia. Magnesium is needed for dilating the cerebral blood vessels and a lack of it can lead to all kinds of headaches.

8/11

Neurological problems like unusual eye movements

One of the subtle yet telling signs of magnesium deficiency can show up in the eyes. Low magnesium may cause persistent eyelid twitching or, in more severe cases, rapid involuntary eye movements known as nystagmus. These symptoms occur because the mineral is essential for proper nerve signaling, and its shortage can directly affect muscle control around the eyes.

9/11

Healthy diet

A healthy diet is imperative for all women, but if that is not enough, supplements are a must
