The entire blood of the human body passes through the kidneys about 40 times a day

Major organs of the body like the kidneys need to be taken care of regularly. There are several warning signs of an unhealthy kidney which should never be ignored irrespective of whether they are subtle or serious. One should always remain alert on even minor signs and changes in the body, so that any sort of disease does not get the scope to progress to an advanced stage. It is advisable to get the symptom medically diagnosed and treated immediately.

Kidneys are the twin organs of the body which purify the blood, remove wastes and toxins from the body. These bean shaped organs are about the size of a fist and are located just below the rib cage at each side of the spine.

The entire blood of the human body passes through the kidneys about 40 times a day.

With so many important biological functions going inside the kidney, it is vital to spot any signs of a malfunctioning, so that the disease or the infection is checked at an early stage:

2/11

You are listless more than often

If you are feeling tired more than often in recent days, it might be because of the toxin build up in your body due to improperly functioning kidneys. Toxins will affect the other biological functions of your body and presence of impurities in the blood can give rise to several other complications.

3/11

You are not getting sufficient sleep

While there are several reasons behind this, kidney disease can be a major reason too.

Sleep apnea or the inability to catch a good amount of sleep is highly associated with kidney diseases.

4/11

Dry, flaky and itchy skin

If this condition persists for a longer duration without any other explanation, do visit your doctor and get your kidneys tested. While removing the toxins from the blood, the kidneys promote healthy skin too.

Accumulation of toxins will disturb the amount of minerals and other nutrients in the body which subsequently harm the skin and the bones.

5/11

Swollen feet

An unhealthy kidney will not be able to remove the toxins from the body completely as a result of which these toxins will accumulate in the body and show their presence.

Similarly when the extra amount of sodium is not removed from the body, it builds up in the feet, ankles and legs making them swell.

There can be several other reasons for swelling of feet, but it is advisable to contact a doctor in case the swelling continues to remain for a longer duration.

6/11

Puffiness around eyes

If you notice swelling around your eyes that gives an impression of puffiness, get your kidneys tested. While sodium deposition causes legs to swell, when proteins are removed in the urine due to a malfunctioning kidney the eyes will puff.

7/11

Muscle ache

Unbearable pain in the muscle might also be due to the high levels of waste toxins and unnecessary levels of minerals in the body when the kidneys can not process them completely.

Muscle aches should not be dealt with lightly and one should immediately seek medical intervention for the same as it can be the symptom of several underlying diseases.

8/11

Inability to breathe properly

When there is an issue in the kidneys, the patient is unable to breathe properly which might be because of lack of a hormone called erythropoietin.

On the lack of erythropoietin, experts at WebMD say, "The hormones signal your body to make red blood cells. Without it, you can get anemia and feel short of breath. Another cause is fluid buildup. You might have a hard time catching your breath. In serious cases, lying down may make you feel like you’re drowning."

9/11

Change in urination frequency

Many people guess a kidney disease on the basis of the change in the urination frequency. If your urination has increased or decreased from the regular frequency in the last few days, do not delay and consult a doctor. It might be that a timely doctor visit may save you from a bigger visit in the future.

10/11

How to prevent a kidney disease?

Regular health screenings is the best way to detect any illness in its early stages.

As far as kidney disease is concerned, the UK's National Health Services (NHS) recommends managing underlying conditions, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, which can lead to chronic kidney disease.

Furthermore, one must make necessary lifestyle changes. Indulge in a healthy lifestyle, stop smoking, manage alcohol consumption, exercise regularly and do not take painkillers frequently. These have the potential to affect your risk factors.

11/11

How to take care of kidneys?

It is very important to keep these twin organs healthy. In order to make sure your kidneys remain healthy and functional you need to control your blood sugar level, blood pressure and weight.

Refrain from overconsumption of alcohol and smoking and drink plenty of fluids.

Never ignore subtle signs like pain in the particular region and/ or change in urination frequency. Consult a doctor immediately and do not give the disease a scope to progress.
