UTIs are more common than you think

Urinary tract infections are extremely common. They happen when bacteria enter the urethra and travel up to the bladder and kidneys. Since a certain amount of bacteria is always present around genitals and the rectum, these bacteria can easily enter the urethra especially in women’s bodies where the urethra is much closer to the rectum. In men’s urinary tracts, the urethra goes through the prostrate and along the length of the penis which make the urethra longer than women’s. Because of this very reason, it is difficult for bacteria to reach the urethra but in any case, urinary tract infections can affect both the genders. Knowing the most common factors that can lead to these infections is extremely useful in order to steer clear of them. Here are the most common factors that can lead to urinary tract infections.

Gastro-intestinal complications

Diarrhea and constipation are equally likely to cause a urinary tract infection for people with diarrhea have an increased risk of bacteria around the genitals and constipated people find it difficult to empty their bladders which facilitates the proliferation of bacteria. If you face chronic gastro-intestinal issues, you should consult a doctor immediately.

3/7

Diabetes

Uncontrolled levels of diabetes can lead to interrupted blood flow to the bladder nerves which makes it difficult for the bladder to contract, and empty it completely. Reduced immunity in people suffering from diabetes also leads to the multiplication of bacteria in the bladder. In diabetic people, glucose spills in the urine which is responsible for creating a suitable environment for the proliferation of bacteria. Keeping your blood-sugar levels under control is the best way to avoid urinary tract infections.

4/7

Pubic hair

Pubic hair prevent the entry of bacteria but they can also serve as a ladder for the bacteria to travel from the anus to the vagina. When you engage in intercourse, ensure that you trim your pubic hair for they can trap bacteria from your partner’s genitals and lead to infections.

5/7

Dehydration

One of the most important and common reasons that lead to urinary tract infections is not drinking enough water which disrupts regular trips to the toilet. Peeing regularly helps the body get rid of bacteria that could be present in the bladder and can cause infection later.

6/7

Diaphragms

Not all birth control methods, but a few of them like diaphragms can be extremely potent facilitators of a UTI for they lead to the compression of the urethra and can interrupt the proper passing of urine which is especially important post sex. Do not use diaphragms if you are prone to UTIs.

7/7

Wiping improperly

The golden rule for women says that you should always wipe from front to the back for doing it the other way round can facilitate the movement of bacteria from the anus to the vagina. This can lead to the entry of bacteria into the urinary tract and increase the chances of infections.
