Omega 3 supplements are good for the human body, but its overdose can have side effects

Omega 3 supplements are good for the human body in several ways. But have you ever thought if you are taking the right dose or not? Supplements are good for various bodily functions no doubt, but only a definite amount of these are used in the body. When the doses cross the required limit, these are useless to the body and as a repercussion the body reacts when these nutrients get overloaded.

What is Omega 3 useful for?

Omega 3 is a type of fatty acid which is useful for the body. However, our body can not make its own omega 3 fatty acid. This is the reason why we need to nourish our body with Omega 3 from diet and supplements.

Omega 3 fatty acids are found in seafish, fish oils, flax seeds, walnuts and chia seeds.

People who do not eat fish often take supplements to fulfill their body requirements of omega 3.

There are three main types of Omega 3: Alpha-linolenic acid which is used by the body for energy, Eicosapentaenoic acid which is mostly found in fish and Docosahexaenoic acid which is a structural component of brain, retina and other body parts.

Research studies have linked the consumption of omega 3 fatty acids with reduction in cases of breast cancer, depression, and several inflammatory diseases.

3/4

What is the ideal dose of Omega 3?

Though Omega 3 is very essential for the body, our body only requires a small amount of it. Therefore, if you are consuming Omega 3 supplements make sure you consume the right amount. Every extra dosage can either go waste or else may force the body to react and throw it out of the body.

As per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a person should take 250 mg to 2g of Eicosapentaenoic acid and Docosahexaenoic acid. Since Docosahexaenoic acid is a structural component of many body organs, experts recommend that the Omega 3 supplement should atleast have 250 mg of DHA.

Higher amounts of Eicosapentaenoic acid in the supplements will be useful for those who have inflammatory diseases.

It is therefore advisable to contact your doctor before taking the supplements so that you know what works for you better.

How does your body react to an overdose of Omega 3?

An overdose of omega 3 might leave a fish-related taste in your mouth for a longer duration than it should be.

Overloading the body with doses of Omega 3 might also make your burp feel like fish and fish oil.

While these are the mild signs that your body is more than sufficient of omega 3, if you do not cut down the doses the excess amount of omega might disturb your body.

For example, a high dose of omega 3 can cause a sudden spike in the blood sugar level.

Excess consumption of these supplements are also known to increase weight. These also disturb the sleep pattern when consumed in excess.

So whenever you feel fishy breath or burp after consuming these supplements, consult your doctor and check on the dosage.
