The best sleeping positions for a good night's rest

While some individuals are simply blessed to enjoy a full night of quality sleep no matter how they lie down, many others struggle (often for hours) to get into the right position and be comfortable, before they start dozing away. It is no secret that getting enough sleep is key to good health, but how do you ace the perfect position to catch that all important shut-eye? Here are some positions that are best suited for night sleep...

2/6

Side Sleeping

Probably the most popular one, side sleeping helps keep your spine aligned, and reduces pressure on your back and neck. Sleeping on your side also improves breathing by keeping airways open, which can reduce snoring and symptoms of sleep apnea. Additionally, side sleeping aids digestion and can help prevent acid reflux, especially if you sleep on your left side. For pregnant women, this is the only recommened position, preventing pressure on internal organs like the liver. If you want to take it a notch up, use a pillow between your legs for spinal alignment and comfort.

3/6

Fetal Position

In a fetal position, you curl up with your knees pulled toward your chest. This position provides a sense of comfort, and security, as it allows the spine to rest naturally while reducing strain on the hips and lower back. Research suggests that sleeping in this position may even help the brain function more attentively, potentially lowering the risk of neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and Dementia. However, it’s important not to curl up too tightly as this can restrict breathing. Stretching out slightly while maintaining the fetal posture ensures better airflow and overall comfort during sleep.

4/6

Back Sleeping

Sleeping flat, though not preferred by everyone for the entire night is good for your back, as it maintains spinal alignment and evenly distributes body weight, which helps prevent aches in the neck and lower back. This position can also reduce nasal congestion by allowing airways to remain open, especially if you elevate your head slightly with a pillow. It can also prevent wrinkles and skin issues, since you are not coming in contact with a pillow. However, this position may worsen snoring or sleep apnea in some individuals due to gravity affecting throat tissues. To counteract these issues, placing a pillow under your knees can support the natural curve of your spine and improve comfort.

5/6

Stomach Sleeping

While stomach sleeping is less common, it can be helpful for certain conditions like snoring or mild sleep apnea because it keeps airways open by shifting gravity forward. However, this position can strain the neck and lower back due to twisting of the spine. To avoid that, using a soft pillow under your forehead instead of turning your head to one side, can help maintain better alignment while keeping airways unobstructed. Stomach sleeping can also provide relief in pneumonia by improving lung inflation during rest. (it cannot treat the condition though)

6/6

Log Position

The log position involves lying on your side with both arms straight down by your sides. This posture keeps the spine aligned while reducing pressure on joints, making it ideal for people prone to neck or back pain. It also helps reduce symptoms of sleep apnea by preventing airway blockages associated with back sleeping. The simplicity of this position makes it easy to maintain throughout the night without frequent tossing or turning. Adding a pillow between your knees can further enhance comfort.
