The 5 foods men over 50 must avoid to prevent Prostate Cancer

After skin cancer, Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in men. An aggressive and often fatal condition, the condition develops where cancer cells develop in the prostate gland, a small gland in the male reproductive system located below the bladder. The condition is usually seen in older men, and risk starts to set in when one crosses 50 years of age. While genetics, age, and lifestyle do play a role, diet is also an important factor in prostate health. Certain foods can increase the risk of developing prostate cancer. Here are 5 foods men over 50 should avoid to reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

2/12

Red/Processed Meat

This includes beef, pork, and lamb, along with items like sausages, hot dogs, bacon, and deli meats. According to research, eating large amounts of red and processed meat, especially when cooked at high temperatures, can increase the risk of prostate cancer. This is because cooking meat at high heat creates harmful chemicals called heterocyclic amines (HCAs), which may damage cells and lead to cancer. If you really want to eat red meat, limit its consumption to once or twice a month only, and avoid deep frying it.

3/12

High-Fat Dairy Products

Dairy products such as whole milk, full-fat cheese, butter, cream, and full-fat yogurt contain saturated fats and hormones that may increase prostate cancer risk. Research suggests that consuming large amounts of whole milk and high-fat dairy can raise the chances of developing aggressive prostate cancer. However, you can always opt for low-fat or fat-free dairy products instead of full-fat versions. Try non-dairy alternatives like almond milk, soy milk, oat milk, or flax milk.

4/12

Saturated Fats and Trans Fats

Doctors say that anything that comes in a box, such as meat, butter, cheese is unhealthy for you. Trans fats are often present in baked goods, fried foods, and packaged snacks. These unhealthy fats can increase inflammation and may promote the growth of prostate cancer cells. Replace saturated and trans fats with healthy fats like olive oil, avocado, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids. You can also use homemade ghee for all your gravies, and daals, though go easy on its quantity as well. Cut out all processed and junk food, except like an occasional treat.

5/12

Sugar

Sugar, even in small quantities has no nutritional benefits, but excess sugar intake can lead to obesity, which is a known risk factor for prostate cancer. Sugary sodas, juices, candies, pastries, mithais, and other sweets cause blood sugar spikes and weight gain. Excess body fat can increase inflammation and hormone imbalances that may promote cancer growth. Limit sugary drinks and sweets as much as possible. Choose whole fruits instead of fruit juices or sugary snacks. Focus on whole grains and fiber-rich foods to keep blood sugar stable.

6/12

Alcohol

Drinking alcohol in excess can weaken the immune system and increase the risk of several cancers, including prostate cancer. Alcohol may also affect hormone levels and cause inflammation, which can harm prostate health. Limit alcohol intake to moderate levels or avoid it altogether, as no amount is safe, according to doctors. If you drink, stick to recommended limits, and slowly give it up altogether.

7/12

What is prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer is a common type of cancer that originates in the prostate, a small gland in the male reproductive system located just below the bladder. This gland produces fluid that forms part of semen. The cancer develops when cells in the prostate begin to grow abnormally and uncontrollably. While many prostate cancers grow slowly and may not cause significant problems for years, some aggressive forms can spread quickly to other parts of the body, particularly the bones and lymph nodes, making them much more dangerous. Early detection, often through screening tests like the PSA blood test and digital rectal exam, is crucial, although a biopsy is the only definitive way to diagnose it. Risk factors include age, family history, and ethnicity, with symptoms in later stages potentially including urinary problems, blood in urine or semen, and pain in the lower back or hips.

8/12

Diet

Focus on a well-balanced and nutritious diet.

9/12

Signs and symptoms of prostate cancer

In its early stages, prostate cancer often presents with no noticeable symptoms, making regular screenings crucial for detection. When symptoms do appear, they commonly involve changes in urination, such as frequent urination (especially at night), difficulty starting or stopping a urine stream, a weak or interrupted flow, and a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying. Other potential signs include pain or burning during urination or ejaculation, blood in the urine or semen, and pain in the back, hips, or pelvis that doesn't go away, which may indicate more advanced disease or spread to bones.

10/12

Exercise

Exercise can also help to reduce the risk of all sorts of cancer.

11/12

Talk to your doctor

If you notice these symptoms, talk to your doctor.

12/12

Take care

Start taking care of these, today itself
