On December 8, a new strain of Covid-19 was discovered in Karakulam, in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. Following Pirola, JN.1, a descendant, has been found in the US, China, and now India, according to press reports. This strain is a new one and has raised concerns and interest all around.

The novel strain first discovered in Karakulam differed from Pirola or BA. 2.86 only by having a single mutation in its spike protein. Although JN. 1 shares many characteristics with earlier Omicron strains, such as high transmissibility and mild symptoms, here are some symptoms you should be worried about as in some people these symptoms may not just be very mild like most other Omicron variants.

According to experts there are some symptoms that may raise concern in some people while most others are mild ones. Is this COVID variant life threatening?

According to Dr. Neeraj Gupta, Senior Consultant - Pulmonology, Marengo Asia Hospitals Gurugram, “Currently, there is no evidence that this is more severe than any other variant, it doesn't appear to have higher fatality rates or greater severity of sickness, so there is no need to panic. Although further research is needed to properly understand its behavior, preliminary findings indicate that it may not be more severe than earlier variations of COVID. The characteristics of the variation, including its transmissibility and effect on immunity, are still being monitored by India and the international community. Still, alertness is essential.”
