What are the symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency evident in our body?

Vitamin B12, often overlooked but crucial for our overall well-being, plays an important role in maintaining the health of our nerves, blood cells, and DNA synthesis. However, deficiency in this essential vitamin can lead to several kinds of health issues, affecting various parts of the body. Here are some of the signs of Vitamin B12 deficiency and how they manifest throughout the body.

2/8

What is Vitamin B12 deficiency?

Vitamin B12 deficiency occurs when the body lacks sufficient amounts of this essential nutrient. It's commonly found in animal products such as meat, fish, dairy, and eggs. However, vegetarians and vegans, as well as older adults and individuals with certain medical conditions, may be at a higher risk of developing this deficiency.

How does it affect the body?

Vitamin B12 deficiency can have major impacts on the body's normal functioning. Without enough B12, the body struggles to produce healthy red blood cells, leading to a condition known as megaloblastic anaemia. Additionally, it can affect the nervous system, leading to neurological symptoms. Here are some symptoms that are evident in the body when someone suffers from vitamin B12 deficiency.

Weak muscles

One common sign of Vitamin B12 deficiency is weakness in the muscles. This weakness may manifest as difficulty in lifting objects, performing daily tasks, or even standing for longer periods. It occurs due to the impaired production of red blood cells, which are responsible for transporting oxygen to the muscles.

5/8

Numb or tingling feeling in hands and feet

Another telltale sign of Vitamin B12 deficiency is experiencing a numb or tingling sensation in the hands and feet, also known as peripheral neuropathy. This occurs because B12 deficiency damages the protective covering of nerves, leading to impaired nerve signalling and sensation.

Smooth and tender tongue

Individuals deficient in Vitamin B12 may notice changes in their oral health, such as a smooth and tender tongue. This condition, known as glossitis, occurs due to the inflammation and swelling of the tongue's surface, making it appear shiny and causing discomfort while eating or speaking.

7/8

Fast heart rate

An increased heart rate, medically known as tachycardia, can be a symptom of Vitamin B12 deficiency. Without enough B12, the body may struggle to produce enough red blood cells to carry oxygen to vital organs, leading to a compensatory increase in heart rate to meet the body's oxygen demands.

8/8

Trouble walking

In severe cases of Vitamin B12 deficiency, individuals may experience difficulty walking or maintaining balance. This can be attributed to the neurological symptoms associated with B12 deficiency, such as nerve damage and muscle weakness, impairing coordination and mobility.
