Cancer signs men may misunderstand for other illnesses

Cancer is a chronic illness that can occur in anyone. Depending on one's age, genes, and lifestyle habits, the likelihood of cancer can increase accordingly. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cancer is the second leading cause of death globally. While breast, colorectal, lung, cervical and thyroid cancer are common in women, lung, prostate, colorectal, stomach and liver cancer are the most common types of cancer in men. Often the symptoms of cancer may resemble signs of other non-threatening diseases, which can lead to delayed diagnosis. That said, here are the signs of cancer men are likely to ignore, but should not!

Testicular changes

Men must regularly check their testicles for any changes in the size, colour or texture. Just as women are asked to frequently self-examine their breasts, men should do the same with their testicles. In case you find one or both testicles have grown in size or if you feel a lump, you must not ignore it and seek medical advice. It could be a sign of testicular cancer.

Changes in the skin

Skin cancer can affect men and women differently. While it may seem more common in women, according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, men are more likely to die of melanoma than women. That said, it is crucial to note any changes in the skin, as it could be more than just a sunburn. So if you notice unusual bleeding, scaling or sores or discover sudden appearance of warts, moles and freckles, visit your doctor for a check up.

Difficulty urinating

Having difficulty urinating may signal some benign issues. However, if it is accompanied by blood in the urine or semen, pain and discomfort and if you experience an erectile dysfunction, then could be a sign of prostate cancer, which can be life-threatening if not treated in time.

Continuous cough

Chronic, persistent cough could mean a lot of things. But if it lasts for three weeks or more without any other cold or allergic symptoms, it could indicate lung cancer. In case you have additional symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, hoarseness or if you cough up blood, contact your doctor immediately.

Mouth Sores

We have all had painful sores in our mouth, but over time they've healed on their own. However, if you develop sores or blisters inside the mouth that do not heal, leads to constant pain, causes swelling and/or numbness, then it could be a sign of certain mouth cancers. Those who chew tobacco, smoke should be more alarmed by these signs and must contact their doctors.

Trouble swallowing

A sore, painful throat has surely become more common with a virus circulating among us, but if it is prolonged and persists for or a few weeks, worsens and makes it difficult for you to swallow your food, then get yourself tested for throat, stomach or lung cancer.

Bloody stool

Blood in your stool could mean anal fissures or hemorrhoids, which are treatable and not life-threatening. However, if a blood stool is accompanied by persistent changes in your bowel habits or prolonged abdominal discomfort, it could be a sign of colon cancer. Make sure you go for a routine check every time you experience these signs.

Unexplained weight loss

A lot of factors can impact your body weight. However, unintentional or unexplained weight loss can be concerning. It could indicate diabetes, overactive thyroid, inflammatory bowel disease and many other illnesses. But one of the most concerning causes can be different types of cancers. If you have made no changes to your diet or workout routine, but still have lost weight, talk to your doctor and try to understand the cause.

Persistent fatigue

Fatigue can be a sign of almost every illness. Even a common cold infection can deprive you of the energy to go about your daily routine. However, if you have been tired for more than a month or feel out of breath suddenly, visit your doctor and get a proper diagnosis. Experts believe persistent fatigue could be a sign of leukemia and lymphoma.
