Do you take your phone to the toilet and spend more time than required, endlessly scrolling through the feed? Well, you may think it is a harmless habit. But it's not. Other than the fact that your phone will be a breeding ground for bacteria from your poop, it will negatively affect your health in more ways than one. Dr. Joseph Salhab, a leading gastroenterologist based in Florida, has now explained why prolonged sitting during bowel movements may put you at increased risk of hemorrhoids.
Why prolonged sitting in the toilet is a problem
Whether you are scrolling through your phone or due to constipation, sitting for long periods in the toilet increases your risk of hemorrhoids. This is because sitting for longer puts unnecessary pressure on the veins in the rectum. “Prolonged sitting when you're trying to use the restroom puts you at risk for developing hemorrhoids, which can be painful and bleed,” Dr. Salhab said.
Hemorrhoids, also known as piles, are swollen veins in the anal or rectal area. It can be internal, inside the rectum, or external, under the skin around the anus.
How to prevent lingering too much time in the toilet
For whatever reason, lingering in the
toilet is not a good idea. If constipation is your concern, the gut doctor has shared some effective tips to prevent it.
Dr. Salhab advises adding more fiber. “Increase your fiber with fruits that can help stimulate bowel movements. This includes things like kiwi fruit, dragon fruit, apples, pears, prunes, and vitamin C helps as well,” the doctor said.
He also suggested adding supplements such as psyllium husk to compensate for the lack of fiber in your diet. “Add it to your favorite drink. Make sure that you're drinking plenty of water throughout the day because water and fiber go like this.”
“Supplement with things like magnesium, such as magnesium oxide or magnesium citrate, which can help stimulate bowel movements as well. When you have to use the restroom, try to find a way to go. Don't avoid it,” he added.
Practice good bathroom habits
It is important to understand that the bathroom is not a place for you to hang, or use your phone. Dr. Salhab advises limiting phone use while you're using the bathroom to avoid prolonged sitting.
Another
habit you can foster is using a stool to keep your feet raised. “You can use a stepping stool like this because when you raise your feet, it allows easier passage of stool, which is really beneficial,” he said.
