Right time to resume sex after delivery

Resuming sex after delivery can be a sensitive topic for new mothers. The physical and emotional changes that come with childbirth can affect a woman's desire and ability to have sexual intercourse. It's important for new mothers to understand that there is no "right" time to resume sexual activity and that every woman's experience is unique.

Here’s what the experts says

Dr. Ruchi Bhandari, Consultant Gynaecologist, Director, Mishka IVF Centre, Jaipur says, “After giving birth, it's normal for a woman to experience vaginal soreness, bleeding, and fatigue. This can make sexual activity uncomfortable or unappealing. It's important to wait until the bleeding, known as postpartum bleeding or lochia, has stopped before having sexual intercourse. This typically takes 4-6 weeks but may take longer for some women.”

Emotional health also matters in intimacy

Physical healing is not the only factor to consider when resuming sex after delivery. Many new mothers also experience emotional changes, such as feelings of insecurity or anxiety. These feelings can affect a woman's desire for sex, and it's important for partners to be understanding and supportive.

Breastfeeding may impact libido

According to Dr. Bhandari, It's also important to note that breastfeeding can affect a woman's hormones and libido. Some women may experience a decrease in sexual desire while breastfeeding, while others may find that it increases their desire. It's important to communicate with your partner and to listen to your own body.

Here’s how to initiate sex after childbirth:

  1. Tell your partner if the penetration hurts. You risk developing an uncomfortable or negative view of sex if you act as though everything is fine when it isn't.

  2. Without actually penetrating each other, you can still make each other happy by, say, masturbating together.

  3. Touch yourself first. Perhaps explore with your own fingers first to ensure yourself that sex won't harm. Use some personal lubricant, if necessary. You might not be as lubricated as usual after giving birth due to hormonal changes.

  4. Make time to lay close to each other as a couple. When your focus is solely on each other rather than anything else, you are more likely to make love.

  5. If you need it, get assistance. Speak with your GP if you're still in discomfort at the time of your postpartum checkup.

  6. It's also important to use contraception after delivery to avoid getting pregnant before your body has fully recovered. Talk to your healthcare provider to discuss the best birth control options for you.

The takeaway

“In summary, resuming sex after delivery can be a sensitive topic for new mothers. Every woman's experience is unique and it's important to listen to your body and communicate with your partner. It's normal to experience physical and emotional changes, and it's important to wait until the postpartum bleeding has stopped and to use contraception. Remember to be kind and understanding to yourself and your partner during this time.,” says Dr. Bhandari.
