Prediabetes warning: 5 morning symptoms that could be the first sign

Prediabetes affects an estimated 98 million Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Globally, this condition affects 541 million people. Prediabetes is a serious condition where the blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough yet for a diabetes diagnosis. Don’t let the ‘pre’ fool you. If left unchecked, this condition will progress to type 2 diabetes and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Detecting the early signs is crucial to managing the condition and preventing further complications. Here are 5 morning symptoms of Prediabetes that you should not dismiss.

Why is it important to know the prediabetes symptoms

Prediabetes is like a big flashing warning sign from your body saying, “Hey, your blood sugar’s running higher than normal, but you’re not full-on diabetic… yet.” It doesn’t always cause obvious symptoms, which is why so many people don’t even know they have it. The good news? Prediabetes doesn’t have to turn into type 2 diabetes. With some simple changes—like moving more, eating balanced meals, and cutting back on sugary stuff—you can often turn things around. Think of it as your chance to hit the reset button before things get more serious.

Fatigue

Do you wake up feeling exhausted? If you feel drained, even after a good night’s sleep, it is a red flag. People often dismiss this sign as general tiredness. Persistent fatigue and lack of energy, especially in the morning, could be due to the body’s inability to use glucose for energy. Elevated blood sugar levels at night can also disrupt energy metabolism, because in people with prediabetes, the cells resist insulin, leaving glucose unused. This could lead to lethargy that is especially worse in the morning.

Excessive thirst

One of the hallmark signs of prediabetes is feeling excessively thirsty. One may wake up feeling parched in the morning. This hints at dehydration. Elevated blood sugar levels can lead to frequent urination at night, and as a result, one may wake up feeling thirsty. When blood sugar levels are high, the kidneys work harder to remove the extra sugar. This pulls more fluid from the body, leading to dehydration and making you feel thirsty. People with prediabetes also complain about dry mouth.

Frequent urination

Do you wake up more than once in the night to urinate? Well, then it is important to find the reason behind it. People with prediabetes often struggle with frequent urination at night. Some may wake up multiple times at night to urinate, only to feel the urge again shortly after waking. This is because elevated glucose levels act as a diuretic, overwhelming the bladder.

6/9

Blurred vision

Do you struggle to focus on your clock upon waking up? Blurred vision, especially in the morning, is a warning sign of prediabetes. This happens due to the glucose-induced swelling in the lens of the eyes, and leads to impaired refraction after hours of unstable sugars.
Some people with diabetes also experience blurry vision in the morning, when the blood sugar levels are too high. This is called the dawn phenomenon. If blurry vision persists, consult a doctor right away. Also See: Superfoods for Diabetes: 4 superfoods that help control diabetes naturally, backed by science

Morning hunger pangs

Ravenous in the morning despite having a feast for the previous night’s dinner? Well, then it's time to investigate the reason behind it. People with prediabetes often complain about increased hunger. This is because of the spike in appetite hormones overnight due to an insulin imbalance.

Prediabetes is like a yellow light for your health

It’s not full-blown diabetes yet, but it’s a big warning sign that your blood sugar is running higher than normal. The tricky part? Most people don’t feel any symptoms, so it often flies under the radar until a doctor spots it in a routine blood test. The good news is, prediabetes doesn’t have to turn into type 2 diabetes. Small changes—like swapping soda for water, moving your body more, and getting better sleep—can make a huge difference. Think of it as your chance to hit reset and protect your long-term health.

Dry mouth

When blood sugar levels are higher than normal, the body may produce less saliva, leading to persistent dryness in the mouth. This can also increase thirst, cause difficulty swallowing, and raise the risk of cavities or gum problems. If dry mouth is frequent, especially in conjunction with other symptoms such as fatigue or increased urination, it’s worth consulting a doctor to check blood sugar levels.
