"Throat cancer is an epidemic in the West"

Over the past two decades, there has been a rapid increase in throat cancer in the west, to the extent that some have called it an epidemic, a report by The Conversation says.

The report talks about the incidence of oropharyngeal cancer or the cancer that begins in the tonsils and throat region and how it is linked to oral sex.

2/6

HPV is the link

The main cause of throat cancer is human papillomavirus or the HPV. As per the information available on the US CDC website, 70% of the throat cancer cases that are reported in the US are due to HPV.

HPV infects the mouth and throat region and begins the cancerous growth.

3/6

Why is this a serious concern?

It is a serious concern because HPV is transmitted sexually. Transmission of this virus through the mouth is only possible through oral sex.

As per the report, people with six or more oral sex partners are 8.5 times more likely to develop this cancer.

Oral sex, mostly seen as a non-traditional sex method, is highly prevalent among youngsters these days.

4/6

How does HPV trigger cancer?

Once one catches the viral infection, the report explains, it is not possible to get rid of them completely. In some people these viruses remain behind and replicate continuously in the body.

"and over time integrates at random positions into the host’s DNA, some of which can cause the host cells to become cancerous," the report explains.

5/6

Oral sex is not always the safest sex

Contrary to what many people believe, oral sex is not the safest form of sex. Yes, it might not be a problem for pregnancy, but there is a higher risk of transmission of sexually transmitted infections when one is having oral sex.

The most common reason why one gets STIs during this sex is that people do not use protection and are more exposed to bodily fluids.

The risks associated with oral sex when multiple partners are involved or when a person has more active sexual partners.

6/6

Safety measures to follow during oral sex

Hygiene should never be ignored during oral sex.

It is better to make sure you and your partner are clean enough to begin.

If you have any cuts in your mouth or any sore or ulcer abstain from sexual activity till the wounds heal completely.

Explore barriers and use them during the act so that your health is safe.

In case you notice any sign, that is abnormal, new and is unexplainable do visit a doctor and get it checked.
