Nutrition nation: Fueling your body right on World Health Day 2024
This World Health Day, let’s celebrate the potential of nutrition in empowering health by nourishing our body and mind. In today’s fast-paced world where convenience outweighs good-quality food, it is important to take a break and reflect on the importance of fueling our body with the right and appropriate nutrition. The theme revolves around unlocking the key to a balanced diet, learning about appropriate eating habits, and explaining how wholesome food choices can push us to become healthy and vibrant beings.
We all know that nutrition is the foundation of a strong body and mind - it is not about only calculating calories or limiting certain food sources but about sustaining and nourishing the body with essential nutrients. On the occasion of World Health Day, let’s embark on a journey to explore the importance of balanced nutrition and its impact on our mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
The significance of eating a balanced diet
The habit of eating a balanced diet is more important than just following fad dietary patterns. Optimising your food choices is the fundamental principle of attaining good health, which includes incorporating varied food sources from all the food groups in our diet and the right portions to fulfil the nutritional requirements of our body. A balanced diet provides us with essential nutrients, including protein, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, and fats, required to produce energy, repair tissue, and boost immunity and overall health. However, in today’s day and age, where food and beverage brands overwhelm us with junk food, refined sources, and processed foods, having a balanced diet becomes a challenge. Our busy lifestyle often leads us to choose convenience over balanced nutrition, skewing the ratio in favour of highly processed and refined food in our daily diet. The consequences of poor dietary preferences extend far beyond just physical well-being. These foods also affect our energy levels, mental abilities, and mood.
However, it’s never too late to fuel your journey towards well-being and take positive initiatives to change your diet and lifestyle. What better occasion than World Health Day? Let’s resolve to nourish our bodies with nutrient-rich foods. Here are some tips to guide you on your journey.
Follow mindful eating habits: Start eating mindfully by tuning into your body’s signs of satiety and hunger. Pay attention to how different food groups make you eat slowly and savour every bite. Mindfully choose food sources that fulfil your hunger pangs to prevent eating unhealthy foods - they will improve digestion and encourage a deep connection between you and your food choices.
Consume the rainbow diet: Incorporate a colourful array of vegetables and fruits in your plate because each of these offers a unique combination of minerals, antioxidants, and vitamins. Try to consume varied natural colours, textures and flavours in your daily diet to enhance the diversity of nutrients on your plate.
Prioritise nutrient density: Select foods that are dense in nutrients and low in calories. For instance, go for green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, vegetables, fruits, fatty fish, and eggs. These food sources are packed with essential nutrients to support your entire health system.
Balance macronutrients: Strike a balance between macronutrients, such as protein, carbohydrates, and fats in your diet every day. Protein supports cell growth, muscle building, and the muscle repair process; carbohydrates give energy while good fats are important for vitamin absorption and the production of some hormones. Always go for lean sources of protein (beans, lentils, low-fat milk, egg whites), complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats such as olive oil, nuts, and seeds.
Focus on whole foods: Incorporating whole and bare foods, such as whole cereals and grains, healthy fats, lean protein, yoghurt, nuts and seeds and freshly produced food should be your first priority. Avoid highly refined and processed sources that are loaded with artificial ingredients, additives and preservatives.
Listen to your body: Everyone is unique so it is crucial to listen to the body’s requirements and alter your diet accordingly. Opt for foods that suit your gut and personal health preferences.
By prioritising balanced eating, one can fuel their life with good health and unleash their body’s full potential.
