New COVID variant spreading across the world, here are the symptoms you should not ignore

Questions about the prescense of newer COVID variants and mutations have left the public, as well as the medical experts in a tizzy. Most commonly, the alarming way the UK Kent Variation, also known as B.1.1.7 is spreading and fueling fears of a repeated uprising of the coronavirus wave.

According to several researchers, the UK variant of the virus may soon sweep the world and needs priority help. There are also remarkable differences that have been observed between the Kent variants, and the original COVID strain.

In fact, what the newest studies are trying to highlight is the changed manner in which COVID symptoms of the new strain can show up, which we need to be precautious about.

2/8

Findings of the study

According to an analysis of recent community cases observed in the UK and parts of Europe, COVID-19 patients, diagnosed with the new variant tend to show 'less typical' signs of infection, as compared to the common cold and flu signs we have been educated about.

Researchers now feel the emerging evidence about the same is the need of the hour for the public to be aware of, and get tested as soon as they suspect something, or have been exposed to the contagion.

3/8

How dangerous is the new COVID strain?

It's still a new virus and we are learning to cope with it. At the same time, there's still lot that remains unknown about its efficacy and spread.

Researchers have proven that the Kent mutation of the virus, considered to be the deadliest yet is almost 70 times more infectious, and can spread much more easily. Mortality rate with the virus, is yet unknown.

4/8

What symptoms should you check for?

The novel coronavirus is said to unleash a host of flu-like signs, and unusual, less-typically noticed signs as well.

Since the virus starts off as a respiratory infection in most people, the classic signs of infection were said to be cold, fever, cough or loss of smell.

However, with startling findings of the newer virus, many also suspect that the mutation may start to attack the body in a different manner, unloading different symptoms.

As per observations, the first three symptoms which can strike up people, in the absence of respiratory symptoms are very easy to be missed.

While the signs are classified as unusual presentations of the infection, scientists are also suspecting them to be the symptoms why many cases may have been misdiagnosed in the past.

Here are the symptoms to check for:

5/8

Lethargy and fatigue

Apart from a cough and sore throat, UK experts have observed that a lot of COVID patients now report excruciating weakness as one of the initial sign of infection.

While fatigue is a common sign with any viral infection, in COVID cases, it can be pretty hard to deal with too.

One of the prime reasons for dizziness and fatigue to plague you is the presence of cytokines, which generate in the immune system as a reaction to any infection present in the body. The after-effect of the same, fighting off the pathogen can make your body feel drained and exhausted.

Secondly, since COVID, as a standalone infection can unload a host of symptoms, tiredness can often also be resultant of the same.

6/8

Dizziness and weakness

In many cases, neurological symptoms of the infection can also spin symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, malaise and nausea.

What also makes the symptom super confusing is that it can be hard to ascertain whether or not your tiredness is due to COVID-19 or something else. Here's how you can differentiate if dizziness is a sign of COVID-19 or not.

That being said, the only way to handle your fatigue and weakness is by giving the body the proper care and rest it needs. Stay away from heavy exercising, over-exhaustion, and overall, try to take things lightly. The harder you press your body, the longer your recovery will be.

7/8

Muscle and body aches

Another increasingly common sign seen with the new COVID variant is muscle pains and aches. The number of cases presenting signs of excruciating ache is rising multifold.

The prime reason for muscle aches and body aches to present is myalgia, which is a result of the virus attacking important muscle fibres and tissue linings. Widespread inflammation can also result in joint pain, weakness and body pain during the course of the infection.

If you suspect growing muscle aches, find it difficult to carry out other tasks and have no other pre-existing condition which could be fueling it, you might consider getting a test done for safety.

8/8

What other signs demand a COVID test right now?

Since it's a relatively new virus, and newer variants are being discovered, there's no reason you should take the infection lightly.

If you start to experience signs and symptoms like unusual fatigue, dizziness, muscle pain, weakness, lethargy, body pain, diarrhoea in a common order, it might be a signal you require COVID testing. These signs can come up in any order, be present along with the classic signs (sore throat, fever, cough) or without them. Nevertheless, get tested, quarantine yourself to get back on your feet.
