Magnesium deficiency symptoms in your mouth dentist wants you to know

Oral signs that could point to magnesium deficiency

Magnesium is one of those essential minerals that works behind the scenes in nearly every cell. It helps with nerve function, muscle relaxation, enzyme reactions, and maintaining teeth and bone health.

But many people don’t get enough. When magnesium levels are low, it’s not uncommon for the first signs to show up in the mouth, in sensitive teeth, sore gums, or even disturbances in taste and sensation.

Dr. Mark Burhenne, a dentist with over 40 years of experience, recently listed several oral symptoms on Instagram that may be tied to magnesium deficiency. If several of these are showing up for you, it might be worth checking your magnesium status (diet, labs, etc.) with a health professional.

Bleeding gums

Gums bleed easily when brushing or flossing? Magnesium helps support gum health indirectly through its role in calcium metabolism, bone health, and reducing inflammation. A study on oral manifestations of magnesium (and vitamin D) inadequacy found that low magnesium can lead to increased bleeding tendency, compromised bone support of teeth, and even early tooth loss. When magnesium is deficient, your immune response and healing are compromised. That makes the gum tissue more vulnerable to trauma from plaque or bacteria and slows down recovery.

3/8

Canker sores

Recurring canker sores are painful and often frustrating. While several nutritional and non-nutritional factors can cause them (including deficiencies in B vitamins, zinc, iron), there is some evidence linking them to magnesium status too. Low magnesium may weaken immune response in the mucosal lining of the mouth and slow down repair of small injuries, making ulcer formation more likely.

4/8

Cavities and enamel problems

This is a serious one: enamel that’s weaker, leading to more cavities even when brushing well. Research indicates that minerals like magnesium (alongside calcium and phosphorus) are important for proper enamel formation. Magnesium deficiency can impair calcium absorption, which is crucial for hard enamel and dentin.

5/8

Tooth sensitivity

If sipping something cold or hot sends a jolt of pain, tooth sensitivity might be at play—and magnesium could be involved. Enamel erosion (due to mineral deficiencies) and exposed dentin are common causes. Magnesium’s role in supporting enamel structure and helping buffer acids can help reduce sensitivity.

6/8

Grinding (Bruxism) & jaw clenching

These two are often paired. When magnesium levels are low, muscles may become tense, hyperactive, or unable to relax properly. The jaw muscles are no exception. Studies have linked low magnesium with more frequent or severe tooth grinding and clenching, particularly at night.

7/8

Tingling, numbness or burning sensations (in Mouth)

These sensations are signs of nerve or sensory irritation. Magnesium plays a crucial role in nerve function, and when levels drop, nerves can become more irritable. Tingling or burning in or around the tongue, lips, or mouth tissues could signal this.

8/8

Metallic taste in the mouth

While not reported too much, this could be due to changes in saliva composition, altered nerve signals related to taste, or mineral imbalance affecting how taste receptors work.
