Joint replacement myths that are holding you back from a pain-free life

Busting the big myths about Joint Replacement surgery—with facts

Despite the advancements in joint replacement surgery over the last few decades, I often find patients walking into my clinic carrying not just pain in their knees or hips—but also a bag full of myths and fears. Many of these are rooted in outdated experiences or second-hand stories. So let’s address the most common ones, and replace fear with facts.

2/6

Myth 1: “I’m too young for a joint replacement”

Many believe joint replacements are meant only for the elderly. But I often see patients in their 40s and 50s with severe osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, or rheumatoid arthritis—struggling to walk or sleep due to pain. If joint damage is affecting your quality of life, age alone shouldn’t be a barrier. In fact, timely surgery can help preserve muscle strength and mobility, rather than letting disability set in.

3/6

Myth 2: “It won’t feel natural after surgery”

A very real concern. The good news? Surgical techniques have evolved. For hip replacements, I prefer the Direct Anterior Approach (DAA)—a minimally invasive method that spares muscles and speeds up recovery. Many patients tell me that their new hip feels like their own within weeks.
For knees, robotic-assisted surgery has transformed precision. By customizing the alignment and ligament balance to each patient’s anatomy, it allows us to achieve a more natural-feeling joint and reduce early wear. The technology is here to enhance the surgeon’s skill—not replace it.

Myth 3: “I’ll be bedridden for weeks”

Gone are the days of long hospital stays. Most of my patients walk the same day or within 24 hours of surgery. With enhanced recovery protocols, a motivated patient can often resume basic daily activities within 1-2 weeks. In fact, staying active after surgery is part of the healing.

5/6

Myth 4: “It will only last 10 years”

This was true decades ago. Today’s implants are durable, and with better materials and surgical precision, many last 20 years or more—especially when implanted correctly and with patient compliance.

6/6

Myth 5: “Surgery is the last resort”

I tell my patients: surgery is not a punishment for waiting—it’s a tool to restore life. It doesn’t mean you failed other treatments. It simply means the time has come to regain the freedom to move, travel, or play with grandchildren—without being held back by pain.
In my practice and on my YouTube channel, I’ve seen how education empowers patients. Let’s replace fear with information, and hesitation with hope.
After all, joint replacement is not just about replacing a joint—it’s about restoring a life.

Sorry! Absolutely misleading.... Don't get in to these, you are not a medical journal. Joint replaement is not panacea. Joint replacement may go wrong, it may require revision, it may have infections, It is not permanent solution. Joint replacement at best can last for is around 10 to 15 years... After that what? Do you know medical books define when a patient is a candidate for replacement?
