Warning signs about high uric acid and kidney stones

Considering the stressful and hectic lifestyle most people lead today, many are unable to focus on their diet and regular exercise. This has made certain lifestyle diseases, like high uric acid levels, quite common among people these days. For the unversed, when the body struggles to process uric acid — a waste product from the breakdown of purines — its levels can rise in the blood and urine, a condition known as hyperuricemia. Over time, elevated uric acid can lead to the formation of hard mineral deposits in the kidneys called uric acid stones. These stones often cause intense pain, urinary blockage, and may indicate underlying metabolic or kidney issues. However, recognising its early warning signs and understanding the connection between high uric acid and kidney stone risk can help one take necesarry steps to keep uric acid levels in check. Here we list some warning signs you shouldn't ignore:

2/6

Persistent side pain

One of the classic signs of a kidney stone that appears even before it is detected is pain in the side or back, below the ribs, which may radiate toward the lower abdomen and groin, as per Mayo Clinic. When the stone comes from high uric acid levels, it triggers discomfort as it irritates or blocks the urinary tract. This is a sharp and shooting pain that often comes in “waves”. If you experience something similar, then do consult your doctor and get your health checkup done.

3/6

Blood in the urine (also called Hematuria)

High levels of uric acid can lead to uric acid crystals or stones formation in the kidney or urinary tract. In turn, they can damage the lining of the urinary system, thus causing blood in your urine, as per Cleveland Clinic. And so, some people might with high uric acid levels or kidney stones may notice pink, red or brownish urine, or simply detect blood in tests. Since uric acid stones tend to form in acidic, concentrated urine, this sign may appear even before pain intensifies. Don’t ignore even mild haematuria — it may signal stone formation or kidney irritation from high uric acid.

4/6

Frequent urge to urinate or burning sensation while urinating

With uric acid stone formation, the urinary tract can become irritated, leading to symptoms such as a constant urge to urinate, small volumes of urine, or a burning sensation when peeing, as per Mayo Clinic. Because uric acid crystals tend to form in acidic, concentrated urine, the process may irritate the bladder or urethra. If you’re also aware of elevated uric acid levels, these urinary changes should prompt you to talk to a doctor.

5/6

Cloudy or foul-smelling urine

Kidneys help in removing toxins from the body. But when the kidneys are not functioning well, there might be changes in urine clarity and smell, which may be early warning signs. Uric acid crystal formation and urinary stagnation can produce cloudy, foul-smelling urine, as per the Cleveland Clinic. This suggests that metabolic waste (including uric acid) is accumulating or not being excreted properly. Combined with other signs like elevated uric acid or dietary risk factors, this change becomes clinically significant. Persistent changes in urine appearance or odor should never be ignored, as they can indicate underlying kidney issues, infections, or metabolic imbalances that require timely medical evaluation and intervention to prevent further complications.

6/6

If you have frequent gout flareups or high uric acid levels with kidney risk

If you have a history of Gout or are diagnosed with high uric acid (hyperuricemia), you are at increased risk of developing uric-acid type kidney stones, as per the National Library of Medicine. One study, as per BioMed Central, found a clear dose–response relationship: as serum uric acid levels increased, so did the risk of kidney stone formation, even before full hyperuricemia was diagnosed. If this applies to you, staying alert to other warning signs becomes especially important.
