Heart health: 7 warning signs to recognise a heart attack quickly (and timely)

A heart attack occurs when blood flow to heart muscle tissue becomes blocked by a blood clot. Heart attacks are a medical emergency, and can be fatal if not treated quickly, ideally just under minutes. While some heart attacks feel sudden, most of the time, the human body gives warning indicators before heart attacks which people should treat as critical alerts. People who recognise these warning signs, will receive medical assistance promptly which leads to better survival rates, and decreased heart tissue damage. The ability to recognise these warning signs enables people to receive proper medical care in a timely manner. Here are 7 such signs to recognise a heart attack quickly (and timely)

2/8

Chest discomfort or pain

The most frequent initial heart attack symptom presents as chest discomfort, which people experience as pressure, squeezing, heavy or tight sensations. The chest discomfort persists for multiple minutes, while it may appear, disappear, and create a sensation of heavy pressure that weighs down on the chest area. People frequently mistake this symptom for indigestion or heartburn, which leads them to ignore it. Any form of chest discomfort, no matter how mild, requires immediate medical evaluation because it could indicate a serious heart condition.

3/8

Pain spreading beyond the chest

The pain of a heart attack begins in the chest but it can move to different body regions, including the arms, shoulders, back, neck, jaw and upper stomach area. The heart's nerve supply extends to these areas, which explains why pain spreads throughout them. Women often experience heart attack symptoms primarily through pain in their arms, shoulders, back, neck, jaw and upper stomach. Medical help becomes essential when chest pain or unusual discomfort in these areas persists, and occurs suddenly while accompanied by chest pain symptoms. The prompt identification of this symptom enables patients to receive urgent medical care.

4/8

Shortness of breath

An early heart attack can be indicated by breathing difficulties that occur, without chest pain symptoms. The heart's poor pumping function results in lung fluid accumulation and body oxygen deficiency. The onset of shortness of breath can be immediate, or it may develop gradually while resting, or performing light physical activities. People frequently dismiss this symptom because they believe it resembles asthma or other lung-related conditions. Medical professionals need to perform urgent evaluation when patients experience unexplained shortness of breath.

5/8

Cold sweat or clamminess

A heart attack warning sign includes unexpected cold sweating and clamminess, which occurs without any apparent reason such as heat or heavy exercise. The body produces excessive cold and sticky sweat when the heart experiences stress. The body produces this distinct type of sweat which appears rapidly. The condition brings along additional symptoms of discomfort, weakness and unease. People should seek emergency medical assistance right away when they experience cold sweating together with chest pain or breathing difficulties.

6/8

Nausea, indigestion or stomach discomfort

Women, in particular, who experience heart attacks, often show symptoms through nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort and indigestion. The digestive symptoms often lead people to believe they have stomach flu or acid reflux, instead of heart problems. Heart-related problems might be present when digestive symptoms emerge suddenly, while accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath and fatigue. The early detection of these warning signs enables patients to receive their life-saving treatment without delay. A doctor needs to be informed right away when these symptoms appear.

7/8

Light-headedness or dizziness

A heart attack can sometimes start with brief episodes of dizziness, or light-headedness in the head which have no apparent reason. This occurs because the heart fails to deliver enough blood to the brain, which results in blood pressure drops and irregular heart rhythms. Heart attacks that cause dizziness or fainting episodes, suggest dangerous heart rhythm disturbances. People should never dismiss these symptoms because they do not stem from trivial health issues. Medical professionals need to provide immediate care, because it prevents additional health complications from developing.

8/8

Unusual fatigue or weakness

Those who experience unexplained fatigue or weakness, should seek medical help because these symptoms might indicate an impending heart attack. People experience extreme exhaustion after doing small tasks, or while performing their regular daily activities. The fatigue experience is described as overwhelming, and distinct from typical fatigue, that results from work or stress. The symptoms of chest pain and breathlessness might accompany this condition. The early detection of this warning sign along with immediate medical intervention, will enhance survival chances.
