Green tea vs Black coffee: Which is better for weight loss?
When aiming for weight loss, changes in the diet are the first step. This includes switching foods and drinks. For those addicted to tea and coffee, dieticians usually recommend green tea and black coffee as alternatives as they aid in the weight loss process and work as catalysts for the fat-burning process. But which of them is better for weight loss? Let's find out.
Green tea for weight loss
Green tea has long been promoted for weight loss. In a study published in the National Library of Medicine, a network meta-analysis of 22 randomized trials found that regular consumption of the drink led to an average weight loss of 1.23 kg compared to placebo. The epigallocatechin gallate in green tea is proven to reduce body fat, waist-to-hip ratio, waist circumference and body mass index.
Green tea helps in weight maintenance
In people already on the journey of weight loss, green tea helped sustain weight loss by boosting metabolism and fat oxidation during the maintenance phase, cited a study in the National Library of Medicine.
Black coffee for weight loss
Research states that a high metabolic rate by 3 to 11 per cent, leads to suppressed hunger and a reduction in the overall calorie intake. A study by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health revealed that four cups of coffee a day could reduce body fat by about 4%. According to the National Library of Medicine, the drink also promotes BMI and body fat reduction.
Black coffee for overall health
Unsweetened black coffee is also known to lower the risk of various diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The increase in consumption of one unsweetened coffee was associated with a decrease in weight of around 0.12 kg.
Green tea and black coffee vary in appetite suppression
While green tea enhances the feeling of satiety and curbs calorie intake, black coffee suppresses hunger via caffeine with users reporting 10-20% less hunger.
Green tea wins the cup
While both green tea and black coffee are proven to be highly effective in weight loss, green tea has more benefits in terms of overall health with its antioxidants and weight loss in particular. Whichever you prefer, make sure to drink in moderation and pair it with a healthy diet and exercise.
