Foods that can naturally help lower cholesterol

High cholesterol levels are a silent threat that can increase the risk of heart disease, including a heart attack and stroke. This condition occurs when you have an excess of a waxy, fat-like substance called cholesterol in the bloodstream. Though the body needs a certain amount of cholesterol to build cells and produce hormones, too much of it, especially low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the ‘bad’ cholesterol, can lead to plaque buildup in the arteries. If left untreated, it could cause heart disease. Your diet can help to lower cholesterol naturally, when combined with other lifestyle changes. Here are 5 foods that you can add to your diet to lower cholesterol.

2/6

Oatmeal

Adding whole grains to the diet can significantly lower LDL. Oatmeal is a star ingredient that can reduce cholesterol due to its high beta-glucan content, a soluble fiber that binds cholesterol in the gut, reducing its absorption.Oatsare one of the best sources of fiber. You can have a bowl of steel-cut or old-fashioned rolled oats, topped with fresh or dried fruit in your daily meal.

3/6

Avocados

Avocados are the healthiest fats you can eat. Yes, these creamy treats are a healthy addition to your diet. They are rich in monounsaturated fats, which lower LDL while raising high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or ‘good’ cholesterol. A 2023studyfound that eating one avocado daily can significantly reduce LDL in overweight adults when replacing saturated fats. They are also rich in fiber and plant sterols, which further aid cholesterol management. You can add avocado on whole-grain toast or toss it into salads for a creamy meal.

4/6

Eggplant

Whether you like it or not, it's time to eat eggplants if you want to lower cholesterol naturally. Exceptionally low in calories and high in soluble fiber, eggplants can help reduce LDL cholesterol. The antioxidants present in this vegetable, particularly nasunin in purple varieties, may protect blood vessels and improve cholesterol metabolism. Animalstudieshave linked eggplant consumption to lower LDL. You can eat them grilled, roasted or blend them into baba ghanoush for a flavorful dip.

5/6

Carrots

Who knew a sweet treat like carrots could help lower cholesterol?Carrotsare rich in soluble fiber, particularly pectin, which can lower bad cholesterol. The beta-carotene in carrots also supports heart health by reducing oxidative stress. You can swap your daily snacks for carrots. Raw carrot sticks with hummus would make a perfect crunchy, creamy, and healthy snack.

6/6

Almonds

If you like munching almonds, you may want to know this. Almonds are a source of healthy fats, fiber, and plant sterols, which lower cholesterol. A 2025studyfound that eating 2 ounces of almonds – about 45 nuts- daily led to signs of better cardiometabolic and gut health. The researchers noticed that there was a reduction in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, the 'bad' cholesterol, in people who consumed almonds. The vitamin E in this nut protects against artery damage. You can have a small handful of almonds as a snack, or chop them to sprinkle over yogurt or salads for added texture.
