Eye Injury First Aid: What to do in case of an emergency

First aid for eye injuries

Eye injuries may occur unexpectedly and require prompt attention to prevent further damage and preserve eyesight. Whether the injury occurs at home, at work, or during fun times, learning the right first aid techniques can make a major difference in the outcome.
Here are some first aid procedures to follow if you or someone has suffered an eye injury:

2/7

Evaluate the situation

The first step in giving first aid for an eye injury is to evaluate the situation calmly. Make sure you and the injured person are both safe. If there are any foreign objects or chemicals around, do not attempt to remove them yourself as this may worsen the damage.

3/7

Avoid rubbing or touching the eyes

Dr. Isha Chaudhari, Consultant - Cataract Cornea and Refractive Services, Dr Shroff's Charity Eye Hospital says, “Rubbing might cause additional harm and make the situation worse. Rubbing may cause a foreign object in the eye to scratch the cornea, resulting in corneal damage. If you or someone has suffered an eye injury, it is important to seek medical attention right away. Call medical service or have someone nearby call help for you.”

4/7

Rinse with Water

If the injury involves chemical exposure or small particles to the eye, immediate and continuous flushing is crucial. Use a steady stream of clean water to rinse the eye for at least 15 minutes. Hold the eye open while rinsing to ensure the chemical or small particle is thoroughly washed out.

5/7

Protect the Eye (Blunt Trauma)

If the eye injury is due to a blunt object or impact, protect the eye from further harm. Place a clean, sterile dressing or a moist, clean cloth over the injured eye and gently secure it. Do not apply pressure to the eye.

6/7

Do not attempt to remove stuck objects

“If there is a foreign object, such as glass or debris, embedded in the eye, do not try to remove it yourself. Cover the eye with a protective shield, like a paper cup, and seek immediate medical attention,” says Dr. Chaudhari.

7/7

Do not apply ointments or medication with medical advice

Avoid applying any ointments, creams, or medications to the injured eye unless directed by your doctor as these substances may interfere with proper eye examination and treatment.

“Remember that early and appropriate first aid can significantly minimize the severity of an eye injury and potentially avoid irreversible damage. Always prioritize safety and seek medical attention immediately if you have an eye injury. Proper first aid and prompt medical assistance are critical for the best potential outcome and eyesight preservation,” advises Dr. Chaudhari.
