Essential and common tests for Tuberculosis diagnosis

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health challenge, necessitating accurate and timely diagnosis for effective management and control. A variety of tests are available for diagnosing TB, each with its own strengths and limitations. Understanding these tests is crucial for healthcare providers to ensure accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Here, we delve into the essential and common tests for TB diagnosis.

Tuberculin Skin Test (TST) or Mantoux Test:

TST involves injecting a small amount of purified protein derivative (PPD) tuberculin into the skin, typically on the forearm.
The test relies on the immune system's reaction to the injected substance. A positive result indicates exposure to TB bacteria but does not distinguish between latent infection and active disease.
TST is inexpensive and widely available, making it a common initial screening tool.
Interferon-Gamma

Release Assays (IGRAs):

IGRAs, such as the QuantiFERON-TB Gold test and the T-SPOT.TB test, measure the release of interferon-gamma by T-cells in response to TB antigens.
Unlike TST, IGRAs are not affected by prior BCG vaccination and require only one patient visit for blood collection.
