Long term medical complications associated with COVID-19

Unlike any other disease, COVID-19 changed the way we perceived life and altered our ways of living. From disrupting the lives of millions of people to taking a major toll on our physical and mental well being, the novel coronavirus continues to have a long term effect on our day to day lifestyle. Besides the ever-expanding list of symptoms that goes from mild to severe effects, experts have listed down a set of 6 long term medical complications associated with COVID-19.

2/9

Long term respiratory illnesses

Given that COVID-19 is a respiratory illness, it makes your lungs more prone to damage in the long run. Coronavirus patients have often complained of fatigue, chest pain and shortness of breath, which are all signs of the novel coronavirus. SARS-CoV-2 has the potential of causing inflammatory changes in the lungs, which can negatively impact the lung tissues and sacs, leading to severe long term effects on respiratory health.

3/9

Impact on cardiovascular functions

Abnormal heart rate, palpitations, chest pain and chronic fatigue are reported symptoms of COVID-19. Besides that, formation of blood clots, inflammation of the heart muscles and possibility of a heart stroke are also amongst the major health risks triggered by SARs-COV-2.

4/9

Renal complications

Amongst other medical complications, low kidney function is also one of the growing problems in COVID or COVID-recovered patients. Considering a person is diabetic or is suffering with high blood pressure, the risk of developing kidney problems and renal injuries is much higher.

5/9

Neurological disorders

As a result of COVID-19, patients have also experienced mild to severe inflammations, strokes and seizures in the brain. Even after recovery, patients have complained of experiencing mental confusion, headaches, dizziness and blurred vision during and after the course of their recovery. Loss of sense of smell and taste along with memory problems are reportedly some of the long term effects of COVID-19 on brain health.

6/9

Skin problems

Besides long term damage to internal organs, COVID-19 has also impacted the external layers of the body. Skin rashes and loss of hair are some of the effects of coronavirus that has taken a toll on people.

7/9

Mental health issues caused by COVID-19

While the pandemic took a heavy toll on people's physical health, it has had a severe impact on the mental health of millions of people. From suffering from stress and anxiety, studies have reported psychotic behaviours in patients suffering with COVID-19.

8/9

Other common symptoms of long COVID

Besides the serious and long term complications COVID can cause in people, there are other medical conditions that must not be overlooked. That said, here are some of the most common symptoms you can experience even after having recovered from the illness.

- Brain fog

- Headache

- Fatigue

- Joint pain

- Chest pain

9/9

How to tackle the problem?

While COVID-19 poses severe health risks, it is important that we stay vigilant and be aware of any or all the signs of the deadly virus.

If you develop symptoms associated with COVID-19, it is crucial that you get yourself tested immediately. Self-isolate yourself so as to contain the spread of the virus.

In terms of severe COVID-19 complications, do not hesitate to seek medical help immediately. This will not only facilitate a faster treatment but will limit any long term effects of the virus.
