Do not mistake the signs of kidney stones with other conditions

Those who have had their experiences with kidney stones will know that it can be quite discomforting. Kidney stones are hard deposits built from minerals and salts that develop inside your kidneys, explains the Mayo Clinic.

Several factors including diet, being overweight, certain medical conditions and some supplements and medications can lead to the build up of kidney stones. The symptoms may vary from person to person depending on how advanced the condition have become. That said some of the most common signs of kidney stones are as follows.

Intense pain

According to the Mayo Clinic, kidney stone that develops in the ureters may block the flow of urine and cause the kidney to swell and the ureter to spasm, which can be very painful. The health body describes the pain as 'severe, sharp' that occurs in the side and back, below the ribs. Apart from that, pain that radiates to the lower abdomen and groin, that comes in waves and fluctuates in intensity or a burning sensation while urinating may also signal kidney stones.

Urinary problems

Kidney stones can cause problems with urination. These include frequent urination, difficulty urinating or being unable to urinate, a burning pain sensation while urinating and a cloudy urine. All of these may often be misunderstood as other urinary conditions. However, getting yourself tested is the best way to diagnose it.

Blood in urine

Most people with kidney stones experience blood in their urine. This is also called 'hematuria'. The appearance of the urine is usually pink or reddish. In certain cases the blood is hardly visible until the urine sample is tested in a laboratory.

Fever, nausea and vomiting

Some of the most common symptoms also include nausea and vomiting. People with kidney stones may also experience fever and chills if there is a presence of infection, says the Mayo Clinic.
