Common food ingredients that are silently damaging the liver; here’s how to reverse it

Liver diseases are on the rise globally, and oftentimes, the biggest villain is the diet. The liver is responsible for over 500 essential functions in the body, such as detoxification, nutrient processing, and bile production for digestion. Any disruption to its function can lead to serious health consequences. What you eat plays a crucial role in liver health. Many commonly consumed foods and their ingredients are, however, damaging the liver, even without you realizing it. Here are three common food ingredients that silently contribute to liver damage, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and also ways to reverse it.

2/8

Too many carbs

While carbohydrates are essential for energy production, excessive intake can lead to health issues. Indian diets are especially loaded with carbohydrates. When you eat too many carbohydrates and proteins, they get converted to triglycerides. These are stored in the fat cells and can be deposited in the liver. Insulin resistance can lead to increased triglycerides and increased uptake of fatty acids in the liver, causing further accumulation of liver triglycerides. This leads to fat storage in the liver, which later results in NAFLD.

3/8

Seed oils

Cooking oils, particularly those derived from seeds, can damage the liver. Seed oils like soybean, corn, and sunflower oil, which are commonly used in Indian cooking, are a hidden danger. These oils are high in omega-6 fatty acids, which, when consumed in excess, lead to inflammation and oxidative stress in the liver. This can lead to serious liver conditions like steatohepatitis, a severe form of fatty liver disease. Many processed foods, such as fried snacks and packaged curries, rely heavily on these oils.

4/8

Fructose

Fructose is a type of sugar found in sugary beverages, processed snacks, and flavoured yogurts. Though fructose is naturally found in fruits and vegetables, industrial fructose (sucrose and high fructose corn syrup) is harmful to the liver. Industrial fructose used in all kinds of beverages and processed foods is a driving force innon-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Fructose is first processed in the intestines, where it can affect the gut lining and the balance of gut bacteria. It leads to increased absorption of nutrients and fat-building substances that flow into the liver. High levels of fructose and its byproducts from gut bacteria (like acetate and butyrate) amp up the fat production in the liver, leading to fat buildup and liver damage. Excessive fructose also leads to inflammation.

How to keep the liver healthy

Balanced diet: Eat a well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.

Limit the intake of sugar and processed foods: Reduce intake of sugary drinks, refined carbs, and high-fructose foods.

Hydration: Drink plenty of water to help flush toxins from the liver. However, ensure not to overdo it.

Exercise regularly: Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity to maintain a healthy weight.

Avoid alcohol: Alcohol consumption can severely damage the liver cells. The risk starts from the first drop.

Wash produce: It is important to wash off pesticides and other toxins from the vegetables and fruits you buy.
