Monsoon hazards for tiny eyes: Simple habits for a germ-free season

The monsoon season brings welcome relief from the scorching heat but also creates conditions that allow many infections to flourish, including those that affect the eyes. Children are especially at risk during this time, as their immune systems are still developing and their love for outdoor play exposes them more to germs. The increased presence of bacteria, viruses, and allergens in the environment poses a serious threat to their eye health. By understanding the common eye problems that occur during the monsoon and taking simple preventive measures, parents can help keep their children’s eyes healthy and infection-free. Dr. Jay Goyal, Senior Eye Surgeon and Director at Surya Eye Institute, shares insights on frequent monsoon-related eye issues and practical steps to avoid them.

Common eye ailments during monsoon

The increased humidity and damp environment during this time create perfect conditions for germs and viruses to thrive, leading to a rise in eye infections among children. Here are some common eye problems that tend to occur during the monsoon months:

3/8

Dry eyes

Contrary to popular belief, indoor air conditioning and pollution exposure during a humid season like monsoons can easily cause dry eye syndrome. Some of the common symptoms of dry eyes are burning, stringy mucus, light sensitivity, redness of the eyes, a feeling of something foreign in the eye, watery eyes, and blurred vision. To prevent this condition, children should be taught to use protective eyewear to protect their eyes from wind and pollution, avoid direct air blowing into their eyes, and use artificial tears on a regular basis.

4/8

Red eye or conjunctivitis

One of the most prevalent eye illnesses among children during the monsoon season is conjunctivitis, also called red eye. This illness, which results in conjunctival inflammation, can be brought on by bacteria, viruses, or allergies. Some of the common symptoms of red eye are redness, itching, a grainy feeling, discharge that forms crusts overnight, tearing, and light sensitivity. To prevent these conditions, teach your kids to wash their hands often, use clean towels, avoid sharing personal eye care products, and refrain from rubbing their eyes after touching any surface.

5/8

Stye

A stye is an uncomfortable, red pimple on the eyelid that is brought on by an infection of the oil gland by a bacteria. They are especially prevalent because of the higher humidity levels and inadequate hygiene habits during the monsoon. Itching, light sensitivity, crusting along the eyelid, swelling, discharge, and pain are some common symptoms. To prevent infection, teach children proper facial cleanliness and to wash their hands properly, especially before touching their eyes.

6/8

Other common eye infections

Some other eye infections are extremely contagious and can spread quickly during the monsoon season, especially among children in crowded or unhygienic settings. Common symptoms include eyelashes sticking together, light sensitivity, impaired vision, yellow, sticky pus discharge, and occasionally fever. Precautions: To reduce the risk of infection, wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, and carefully clean your contact lenses.

7/8

Here's what parents should do

Please encourage your child to wash their hands frequently with soap and water. Many eye infections spread through direct hand-to-eye contact. Teach them to avoid rubbing or touching their eyes, especially if their hands are dirty. Using a clean handkerchief or tissue instead of hands to wipe sweat or water from the face can also reduce the chances of infection.
During the monsoon, avoid letting children play in muddy puddles or rainwater, which may carry germs that can easily reach the eyes. Make sure their towels, pillow covers, and handkerchiefs are washed regularly and not shared with siblings or friends. If your child swims in pools, ensure the water is clean and well-maintained, as poorly chlorinated water can be a breeding ground for eye infections.

8/8

Seek medical help quickly

If your child complains of redness, itching, wetness, or blurred vision, contact an eye professional immediately. Avoid self-medicating or using over-the-counter drops, since this may exacerbate the condition. Maintaining a balanced diet high in vitamin A, staying hydrated, and getting enough sleep are all easy but effective measures to keep kids eyes healthy during the rainy season. A few attentive habits can help preserve your child's vision during these uncertain weather.
