Colon cancer: THIS simple test can save your life, a top US doc says

Colorectal cancer is projected to cause 1.6 million deaths and 3.2 million new cases annually by 2040, according to the World Health Organization. This is a staggering escalation of 73% from today’s numbers. It is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Early detection is crucial.

Dr. Emmanuel Aguh, a board-certified family medicine physician based in the United States, explains a test that can save your life. Let’s take a look

What is colon cancer?

Colon cancer is an uncontrolled growth of cells that begins in a part of the large intestine called the colon. The colon is the first and longest part of the large intestine. The large intestine is the last part of the digestive system. Colon cancer is one type of colorectal cancer.

Dr. Aguh was reacting to a video of a woman who got diagnosed with colon cancer at 31. “At 31, being diagnosed with colon cancer is something no one expects. My heart goes out to her and everyone who’s faced this,” he said, in a video shared on Instagram.

Test to catch colon cancer early

The FM doctor emphasized that there is one test to catch colon cancer early, and save your life. “I'm talking about colonoscopies. I know they sound scary, but hear me out for a moment because this is super important. So, colon cancer is a major killer, but it doesn't have to be. A colonoscopy can catch it early, and early detection means way better chances of beating it. This procedure will allow your doctor to spot and remove precancerous polyps before they become dangerous,” the doctor said.

Afraid of a colonoscopy?

For those who are afraid of a colonoscopy, Dr. Aguh has a message. “I get it, the idea of a colonoscopy can be intimidating, but here's the truth. The procedure itself is usually done under sedation, so you won't feel a thing. You sleep and you wake up. Yes, it's a bit uncomfortable, but it's a small price to pay for something that could save your life,” he reminded.

Can a 31-year-old get a colonoscopy?

“While 31 is typically too young for a routine colonoscopy, in those who are average risk, it’s a reminder to never disregard concerning symptoms or changes in your body. These could be signs that further evaluation like a colonoscopy or other studies, is needed to rule out potentially life-altering conditions. Colonoscopies are crucial in detecting and preventing colon cancer. Don’t hesitate to seek help if something feels off,” the doctor said.

Who should get a colonoscopy?

While a colonoscopy is crucial in detecting colon cancer, should everyone undergo it? “If you're over 45, you need to get screened. And if you have higher risk factors, you might need to start even earlier. Also, your doctor might recommend it as part of your evaluation,” he said.

Stressing further on the importance of early screening, he added, “So don't let fear or misinformation hold you back. Talk to your doctor and schedule a colonoscopy if you're due for one. Trust me, your future self will thank you.”
