China's 'walking pneumonia': What's causing the surge and should India fear?

China faces surge in respiratory illnesses

As China navigates its first winter without the stringent COVID-19 restrictions that have been in place for the past three years, an unexpected wave of respiratory illnesses is sweeping across the nation. This surge has piqued the interest of health authorities, with the World Health Organization (WHO) seeking additional information and urging enhanced response measures. While the cause remains unclear, some health experts attribute it to the common aftereffect of lifting lockdown restrictions. Here is all you need to know about the surge in cases of China's 'walking pneumonia'.

2/8

The outbreak

On November 13, China's National Health Commission announced an uptick in respiratory diseases during a press conference, setting the stage for growing concerns. Shortly after, the Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases (ProMED) reported clusters of undiagnosed pneumonia in children in northern China on November 21. The infections have notably spread in Beijing and Liaoning, approximately 800 km apart. The WHO has formally requested detailed information, including epidemiologic, clinical, and laboratory results, to better understand and respond to the situation.

3/8

Causes of the surge

The surge in respiratory illnesses has been linked to the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions, leading to increased circulation of known pathogens such as influenza, mycoplasma pneumoniae, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and SARS-CoV-2. This complex scenario demands a strengthened health system to manage patient increase and improve disease surveillance in healthcare facilities and communities.

4/8

Walking Pneumonia and Mycoplasma Pneumoniae

One noteworthy contributor to the rise is "walking pneumonia," a milder form of pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae bacteria. Unlike severe pneumonia, walking pneumonia is less intense, characterized by symptoms such as sneezing, a runny nose, sore throat, and wheezing. The bacteria spread through small respiratory droplets, making prevention crucial through measures.

5/8

WHO's initiative

The WHO, through its International Health Regulations mechanism, has actively sought additional information on the outbreak. Maria Van Kerkhove, Acting Director of the WHO's Department of Epidemic and Pandemic Preparedness and Prevention, suggests that the increase may be linked to children contracting pathogens they avoided during the pandemic's restrictions.

6/8

Symptoms and vulnerable groups

Children under 5, the elderly, and those with weakened lungs are more susceptible to Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections. Common symptoms include sneezing, stuffy or runny nose, sore throat, watery eyes, wheezing, vomiting, and diarrhea. Early detection is crucial, as the infection can develop into a severe form in vulnerable groups.

7/8

Prevention measures

The WHO recommends a comprehensive approach to lower the risk of respiratory illness in China. This includes vaccination, maintaining distance from the infected, staying home when ill, getting tested and seeking medical care as needed, wearing masks when appropriate, ensuring good ventilation, and regular handwashing.

Should India fear a similar outbreak

India has been on alert due to a mysterious pneumonia outbreak in China. While the risk of a similar outbreak in India is considered low, the Indian government has asked all states to review their medical preparedness as a precautionary measure. Health authorities have ramped up surveillance and preparedness measures to prevent the spread of the disease beyond China.
