Impact of diabetes on sex

Diabetes refers to a group of diseases that can lead to too much sugar in the blood. Diabetes can occur when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin produced.

High sugar levels for a long period of time in your body can put you at a higher risk of sex-related problems – called sexual dysfunction.

Why can diabetes lead to sexual dysfunction?

High blood sugar levels, high blood pressure and cholesterol can lead to sexual dysfunction.

High sugar levels can damage your blood vessels and nerves, including the ones that supply blood to your penis. This can restrict blood flow to your sexual organs, resulting in loss of some sensation. This can lead to difficulty in getting aroused, physically as well as how you feel.

Hormonal changes

Diabetes can lead to changes in testosterone or estrogen. This can negatively impact libido and one’s ability to become sexually aroused.

Side effects of medication

Studies have shown that patients on certain medication for type 2 diabetes can experience significant reduction in testosterone levels, sex drive and erectile dysfunction due to low testosterone. It is best to talk to your doctor about the possible side effects of any medications.

Emotional health concerns

Experts have found that men and women who wear an insulin pump may feel self-conscious that can lead to disinterest in sex. Managing diabetes can also take an emotional toll. This can negatively affect one's sexual function.

What's the solution?

It is important to note that the cause for sexual dysfunction can vary from person to person. Therefore, it is important to consult your doctor if you are experiencing any such problem and seek appropriate treatment. Diabetes doesn’t have to ruin your sex life. With treatment, you may not see immediate results but there is hope that you can resume an active and enjoyable sex life.

Some lifestyle changes can also help to improve your sex life. This includes eating a healthy diet and exercising. Studies have shown that men who switched to a diet low in saturated fat and high in fiber, along with engaging in moderate physical activity each week, were able to improve erectile dysfunction without prescription drugs.

Maintaining a healthy weight can also help. In case your weight exceeds your healthy body weight, even a small weight loss can improve erectile function and sexual desire in men with diabetes, some studies have shown. Reducing your stress levels can also help.
