Air pollution: Watch for these signs for respiratory symptoms

Air pollution is a silent killer

It is invisible, odorless, and tasteless, but it can have a devastating impact on health, especially on the respiratory system. We must stay vigilant and heed the warning signs our bodies provide in response to this unseen adversary.

2/7

Persistent cough

A common sign of air pollution's assault on our respiratory system is the persistent cough. Frequent throat clearing or coughing, especially in urban areas with heavy traffic or industrial activity, can result from the irritating particles and toxic compounds in the air. These invisible invaders can inflame the respiratory tract, causing discomfort.

3/7

Difficulty breathing

Shortness of breath is another critical symptom to watch for. If a person finds themself becoming winded more easily or experiencing sudden breathlessness, consider the air they are breathing. Air pollution can hinder lung function and oxygen uptake, leading to conditions like asthma, bronchitis, or emphysema over time.

4/7

Wheezing

Wheezing is a clear sign of trouble. Constricted and inflamed airways, often due to pollution, can produce a high-pitched, whistling sound during breathing. If someone begins to wheeze, they should seek medical advice to prevent more severe respiratory issues.

5/7

Throat irritation

Sore throats, scratchiness, or dryness are frequent companions of polluted air. Noxious gases and particulate matter can irritate the throat's mucous membranes, indicating ongoing damage to the respiratory system.

6/7

Itchy, watery eyes

Don't overlook the eyes. Burning, itching, or watery eyes may result from air pollution, affecting overall well-being. The same irritants that inflame the throat can affect the eyes, causing discomfort and vision problems.

7/7

Stay safe

Watch for signs of increased susceptibility to respiratory infections. Exposure to polluted air weakens the immune system's defenses in the respiratory tract, making a person more prone to colds, flu, and other respiratory illnesses. More frequent illness may reflect compromised respiratory health.

Recognizing these symptoms in the early stage will allow a person to protect themselves and advocate for cleaner air, safeguarding their future and that of future generations. A person cannot ignore the importance of respiratory health, and their response to air pollution must be swift and resolute.
