Acute and chronic Leukemia (Blood cancer): Differences and 5 early signs

Leukemia, also known as Blood Cancer is a malignancy that affects the blood and bone marrow, leading to a rapid overproduction of abnormal white blood cells. These abnormal cells disrupt the bone marrow's ability to produce healthy red blood cells and platelets, thus slowing down the body's normal blood cell production. Different leukemia types exist, and the condition develops either slowly or rapidly, known as chronic, or acute Leukemia. Early detection of leukemia and its two major forms, depends on understanding the distinction between acute and chronic leukemia, and identifying initial warning signs.

2/8

What Is Leukemia

Leukemia occurs when the bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells that appear in the bloodstream. These cells do not work the way normal blood cells do, and they can crowd out healthy cells. Your body experiences functional issues because of abnormal blood cell production. There are four main types of leukemia which scientists divide into two major categories: acute and chronic leukemia. The main difference between these two leukemia types emerges from their speed of progression, as well as the specific blood cells they impact.

3/8

Acute vs chronic Leukemia: Key differences

Acute leukemia leads to quick disease progression, which becomes apparent within days and weeks. The condition produces numerous immature white blood cells called blasts, which replace the existing healthy blood cells. On the other hand, the progression of chronic leukemia occurs slowly throughout several months, up to multiple years. White blood cells in chronic leukemia have reached maturity, but retain their nonfunctional status. The initial symptoms of chronic leukemia are usually faint, until they advance to severe levels and most patients are able to survive for many years post diagnosis. Acute leukemia presents an immediate danger to life if left untreated, yet chronic leukemia can somehow be managed, but requires constant monitoring.

5 early signs of Leukemia

Chronic fatigue

The main symptom of leukemia involves intense fatigue, combined with weakness, and shortness of breath. This apart, Anemia occurs because your body lacks sufficient healthy red blood cells. When your body runs out of red blood cells, your organs become unable to receive enough oxygen, which leads to tiredness in everyday activities. Anyone suffering from Leukemia might struggle to carry on with regular, day to day activities.

5/8

Falling sick often

Leukemia patients face higher risks of developing infections, because their immune system weakens, and is unable to fight off infections as well as before. Because of this, any standard, even mild infection can prove challenging to handle. This occurs because abnormal white blood cells fail to perform their germ-fighting duties, because of their malfunctioning nature. The repeated occurrence of infections such as colds, urinary tract infections, and sore throats happens more often than normal to patients.

6/8

Easy bruising or bleeding

People who have leukemia, experience more frequent bruising and experience bleeding in their nose, gums as well as tiny red skin spots known as petechiae. Unusual or excessive bleeding without a clear cause is a warning sign. This occurs because the blood clotting process is impaired by leukemia, because the disease affects the platelet cells. These small bumps result in large bruises that persist longer than expected, and the bleeding shows no sign of stopping.

7/8

Rapid weight loss

When leukemia first develops, it often causes patients to lose weight unexpectedly while their appetite disappears. Other symptoms including tiredness and night sweats, usually appear alongside these signs. During the condition, the body's metabolism shifts which results in weight loss. Some individuals experience rapid satiation after eating, followed by discomfort which causes them to decrease their food consumption even further.

8/8

Swollen lymph nodes

Swollen painless lumps which appear in your neck, armpit or groin regions, result from enlarged lymph nodes. Your abdomen might experience pain or a sensation of being full, because your liver or spleen has become enlarged. The growth of abnormal cells within these organs causes their size to increase. The swelling can occasionally produce uncomfortable pressure sensations throughout the body.
