7 ways you might be accidentally body shaming your friend

fat shaming

Passing distasteful remarks on someone's appearance does not only harm their self-esteem but also takes away their happiness. But sometimes the things you say frivolously can accidentally hurt the feelings of your dear ones and chances are you might not even realize it. So, here are 7 ways people body-shame without even knowing it.

2/8

You talk about your body weight

We all make this statement without worrying about the outcome it would have on the other person. Often thin people complain about their belly fat, which is hardly visible, but doing this in front of a person with a higher weight is not a good idea.

3/8

Give unwanted food and exercise advice

It is good that you are excited about a particular diet and exercise routine that you are following. You think that it is working great for you, but that does not mean you will give unnecessary advice to others to try it out. Doing this makes the other person doubt themselves. It also means that they are not really taking care of their body and need to do more.

4/8

Comments on food choices

Regretting about certain food choices or making statements like "I shouldn't be eating this" can make the other person doubt their food choices also. Even if you are commenting about your body, it can make others uncomfortable. Similarly commenting on others' food choices can also make them conscious.

5/8

Equate being thin with being beautiful

Every person is beautiful in their own way and cannot be compared to others. But the act of considering slim and lean body beautiful is incorrect. Moreover, praising a thin person for their physique in front of a heavy person can imbibe a sense of insecurity in them. Though your intentions would not have been to taunt your friend, but they might feel that they are not beautiful as they do not have a perfect body.

6/8

Wardrobe choices

Your clothing choice might be the best, but commenting on others' styling sense is never welcomed. Everyone has the right to choose what they want to wear and it should be left to them. Saying that she would not be able to pull that dress or that color would not suit her complexion is another way of body shaming.

7/8

Ask someone if they have lost weight

You might think that it is a compliment, but in reality, it is not. It is actually a kind of fat shaming. This simply means that a person can only look good after losing weight. Not everyone who loses weight, do it by choice. Some might be losing it because they are sick or has some other problems.

8/8

Fat shame others

This is not accidental, but when you fat shame others, chances are that your friend standing next to you has the same concern. By doing this, you are body shaming your friend too. Though it may not be directed at them, it is still hurtful.
