7 terrible diseases a simple handshake can give, and why washing hands immediately matters

The danger of a handshake

A friendly handshake is seen as a gesture of goodwill. However, it can also be a silent carrier of harmful diseases. Germs can transfer from one person to another through simple hand contact, leading to various infections. Understanding the risks associated with handshakes and the importance of immediate handwashing is quite important for maintaining health.

2/10

Common cold

The common cold is the easiest germ to catch from a handshake. When someone sneezes or coughs, tiny virus particles land on their hands. A handshake spreads these particles to another person, who may then rub their nose or mouth without realising it. The result? Sneezing, runny nose, mild fever, and that overall “ugh, I feel tired” feeling. It’s small but annoying, and can slow down daily life.

3/10

Flu (influenza)

Flu is like the cold’s stronger, nastier cousin. The flu virus can survive on hands for hours, so a handshake with someone infected can easily pass it on. Once infected, symptoms like high fever, body aches, chills, fatigue, and a persistent cough appear. Unlike the cold, the flu can really disrupt routines, making it hard to work or study for days.

4/10

Conjunctivitis (pink eye)

Pink eye may sound harmless, but it spreads super fast through hand contact. If someone touches their infected eyes and then shakes hands, the germs can transfer. Touching the eyes afterward causes redness, itching, and watery eyes. In schools and offices, one case of pink eye can quickly turn into many. Hand hygiene is the easiest way to prevent this chain reaction.

5/10

Hand, foot, and mouth disease

Mostly affecting children, this disease creates small blisters on hands, feet, and inside the mouth. But the virus can live on hands and spread even before blisters appear. A simple handshake can transfer germs from one child (or adult!) to another. The disease usually resolves on its own, but it can cause discomfort and occasionally lead to missed school days.

6/10

Diarrhoea-causing bacteria (E. coli, Salmonella)

These bacteria may not look dangerous, but they cause serious stomach troubles. When hands touch contaminated surfaces, like door handles, food, or even handshake contacts, the germs can enter the mouth. The result? Diarrhoea, cramps, nausea, and dehydration. Handwashing after every handshake, especially before meals, keeps these bacteria away.

7/10

Cold sores (Herpes simplex virus)

Cold sores are painful blisters on or around the lips. Even when they’re not visible, the virus can linger on hands. A handshake followed by touching the face or lips can trigger an outbreak. While not life-threatening, cold sores are uncomfortable, contagious, and can recur frequently. Clean hands are a simple defence.

8/10

Skin infections

Minor skin infections may start as a small redness, bump, or itch, often caused by staph bacteria or fungi. These germs can travel from hand to hand, especially if there are tiny cuts or scratches. While they may seem harmless initially, infections can worsen if ignored, causing pain, swelling, or spreading to other parts of the body.

9/10

Why washing hands immediately matters

Washing hands is like pressing the reset button for health. Using soap and water for 20 seconds removes most germs, while alcohol-based sanitisers work when soap isn’t handy. Clean hands protect not only personal health but also stop the spread to friends, family, and colleagues. It’s a small habit that makes a huge difference in everyday life.
