6 early signs of prostate cancer that are often missed

What are the signs of prostate cancer that most people ignore?

Prostate cancer is the fifth most common cause of death globally and the second most common cancer diagnosis among men, as per a study. It doesn't come with sirens or bright warning lights. In the early stages, the signs might be very subtle, small changes that can easily be mistaken for something harmless. A late-night trip to the bathroom. A slight hesitation before the urine stream starts. A moment of pelvic discomfort that fades as quickly as it came.

These small changes may feel too insignificant to take seriously. That’s why many cases go unnoticed until much later. But behind these "normal" occurrences, the body might be trying to tell something important. Here are 6 early signs of prostate cancer that get overlooked.

2/9

Frequent nighttime urination: More than just ageing?

Waking up more than once during the night to urinate is generally ignored as a normal part of growing older. And while it's true that age plays a role, frequent nocturnal urination, known as nocturia, can also be one of the earliest signs of prostate changes.

When the prostate begins to enlarge or become affected by cancer, it can press on the urethra, disrupting the normal flow of urine. If this symptom appears suddenly or worsens over time, it deserves a closer look.

3/9

A hesitant start to urination

Starting the urine stream feels like a pause button has been pressed. It’s not painful, just oddly delayed.

Prostate cancer can cause the muscles around the urethra to tighten or weaken, making it harder for urine to flow naturally. While occasional delays can be harmless, consistent difficulty starting or stopping urination shouldn't be ignored.

4/9

A weakened or stuttering urine stream

When urine flow feels weaker than usual or seems to come and go midstream, it’s easy to brush it off as dehydration or a temporary issue.

A tumor in the prostate can partially block the urinary tract, disrupting the force of the stream. It doesn’t hurt, but it’s a quiet clue that something might be affecting the normal pathway of urine.

5/9

The persistent feeling of not emptying the bladder

There’s a lingering sensation that the bladder isn’t quite empty, even after a trip to the bathroom.

As the prostate changes in shape or size, it can compress the bladder or urethra. This may leave behind residual urine and lead to a constant urge to go, even when there’s not much there.

6/9

Mild pain or burning while urinating

A slight burning feeling during urination may appear on and off. Many assume it’s just a minor infection or lack of hydration.

This discomfort might be linked to inflammation caused by prostate cancer. While UTIs are more common causes, persistent pain, especially if not resolved with treatment, should prompt deeper investigation.

7/9

Spotting blood in urine or semen

Tiny streaks of blood in the urine or semen can be shocking, but also easy to ignore if they vanish quickly.

Even the smallest trace of blood can be a red flag for changes in the prostate. Although not a common early sign, when this occurs, even once, it needs medical attention, especially if there’s no injury or other obvious reason.

8/9

Unexplained pelvic discomfort or lower back pain

A vague, dull ache in the pelvis or lower back that comes and goes without explanation might be shrugged off as bad posture or strain.

Prostate cancer can, in some cases, cause inflammation or pressure that leads to intermittent pelvic pain. If this discomfort keeps returning or worsens, it should not be dismissed.
