6 common signs of Vitamin D deficiency we often ignore

Like the sunshine itself, the “sunshine vitamin,” aka vitamin D, is crucial for our overall health. The vitamin, which is called the “sunshine vitamin,” because sunlight helps your skin make it, plays a key role in helping your body absorb calcium and phosphorus, keeping bones strong, supporting muscle function, helping your immune system, and even influencing mood. Apart from sunlight, this particular vitamin is also found in certain foods and supplements. However, many people do not get enough of it, and what makes it even more concerning is that often, they don’t realize it until symptoms get worse.

We tend to ignore or write off early warning signs: fatigue, aches, mood dips, hair loss, or frequent colds. These may seem minor or get blamed on busy daily life, stress, or aging. Yet they may be signals from your body that vitamin D levels are low.

Why do we ignore the signs? Because many of these indicators are subtle. Tiredness, mood swings, mild aches – these are common in daily life, so people often think they are “normal.” Also, vitamin D deficiency symptoms overlap with many other conditions. Lack of awareness, attributing symptoms to age or stress, not knowing you are at risk – all lead to delayed diagnosis. Also, many people do not get routine checks of vitamin D, so low levels may go undetected until more severe symptoms appear.

Over time, low vitamin D can lead to more serious problems like weak bones, fractures, or bone and muscle diseases. Some groups – older adults, people with darker skin, those who stay indoors much of the time, people with certain medical conditions – are particularly vulnerable to a higher risk.

The good news? In this guide, we aim to recognize and explore common signs of vitamin D deficiency that many ignore, along with the reasons behind those, so that once you spot any of these, you can take precautionary measures before the condition escalates.

2/7

Persistent fatigue and low energy

Are you feeling too tired, too often? One of the earliest signs many people overlook is fatigue, even after resting or sleeping enough. Vitamin D helps your cells produce energy; when levels are too low, energy production is impaired. You may feel drained doing everyday tasks. Often, people attribute fatigue to busy schedules, stress, or poor sleep. However, if it persists, it might indicate vitamin D deficiency.

3/7

Bone pain, joint discomfort, toothache, or backache

It’s not always some sore due to a long, hard day. As vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption, low levels affect bones and joints. Many people suffer from persistent bone pain, especially in the lower back or around the ribs, or joints that hurt without a clear reason. Over time, deficiency can lead to conditions such as osteomalacia in adults (the softening of bones) and may increase fracture risk. Furthermore, strong teeth depend on calcium and phosphorus, both of which are helped by vitamin D. Low vitamin D can reduce absorption of calcium, putting tooth health at risk – enamel issues, more cavities, and slow dental healing.

4/7

Muscle weakness and cramping

Weak muscles, muscle aches, cramps, or general discomfort when moving or after activity may be linked to low vitamin D. Causes include impaired calcium handling and effects on muscle fibers. Although these symptoms are often dismissed as “just aging” or “overuse,” persistent weakness definitely is a red flag.

5/7

Sudden mood changes, depression, or anxiety

Vitamin D has effects beyond bones. One of the most significant impacts this particular vitamin has is that it helps modulate mood. When vitamin D is low, people more often report feeling “down,” having mood swings, anxiety, or depression. Sometimes these mood issues are attributed purely to stress, work pressures, or seasonal changes, but vitamin D deficiency can be a contributing factor. Adequate sun exposure, fortified foods, or supplementation can help restore levels, support emotional well-being, and improve overall mental and immune health.

6/7

More frequent illnesses, weak immunity, and difficulty healing wounds

The immune system is one of the systems that vitamin D supports. When your levels are low, you're more likely to catch colds, flu, or respiratory infections. Healing may also be slower when you're ill. If cuts, sores, or surgical incisions are slow to heal, vitamin D deficiency could be part of the issue. Vitamin D helps with immune response and skin cell turnover. Without enough vitamin D, the body’s repair mechanisms slow down.

7/7

Hair loss, skin, and nail issues

Hair loss is another sign that many don’t connect with vitamin D. The vitamin helps with hair follicle health; very low levels may contribute to hair thinning or loss. Skin problems may include dryness, slow wound healing, or more frequent infections in the skin. Nails might become brittle. These signs often get treated topically, but vitamin D levels may be part of the reason.(Image: Canva)
