Suffering from yeast infections? Find out all about the causes

A yeast infection is a fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of the fungus candida albicans. Normally, your vagina contains a balanced mix of yeast, including candida, and bacteria. However, when there is an overgrowth of yeast, it can lead to an infection.

Suffering from a yeast infection can be extremely annoying. It can cause symptoms such as itching and irritation in the vagina and vulva, a burning sensation, vulval swelling, vaginal pain, rash and thick, white, odor-free vaginal discharge. Several factors can lead to a yeast infection. Here are 5 common causes.

High blood sugar levels

It is important to know that yeast feeds off sugar, which is why people with high blood sugar levels can experience an overgrowth of yeast in their vagina. Excess blood sugar in the body can act as a breeding ground for the fungi. Furthermore, excess sugar can throw off the pH balance in the intimate area, which allows the yeast to thrive.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics can help treat several bacterial infections. It can destroy or slow down the growth of the bacteria, which can lead to complicated conditions. However, the use of antibiotics can have several side effects, one of which include the onset of yeast infection. Broad-spectrum antibiotics, that destroy a wide range of bacteria, can also kill healthy bacteria in the vagina, which can cause an overgrowth of yeast.

Pantyliners

While there is no solid evidence to suggest that pantyliners can cause yeast infection, women prone to chronic yeast infections are advised against the use of panty liners as they can trap moisture and prevent air flow, creating moist conditions for yeast to thrive, according to the National Women’s Health Resource Center.

Scented intimate hygiene products

According to Medical News Today, intimate washes and other types of vaginal cleansers are linked with a 3.5 times higher risk of bacterial infection, and a 2.5 times higher risk of UTIs. The health site reports that gel sanitizers were associated with an eight times higher risk of yeast infection, as well as an almost 20-fold higher risk of bacterial infection.

Underwear mistakes

Tight and synthetic underwears can trap heat and moisture, which can in turn make yeast infections more prevalent. That said, experts recommend wearing cotton or silk underwear, which allows dampness to evaporate. Also, ensure that your underwear are loose-fitting.
