5 supplements you shouldn’t take if you have inflammation, according to dietitians

Supplements are often known as life savers for those who suffer from nutritional deficiences, fatigues, weakness and even inflammation. However, never should one take supplements without consulting their doctor first, and not all supplements are good for health as well. If you suffer from chronic inflammation, you should avoid taking these 5 supplements, according to dietitians...

2/7

Kava

Kava is a plant used for medicine and rituals in the Pacific Islands. While some parts of kava may help reduce inflammation, other ingredients can cause your body to release molecules that increase inflammation. There is also a risk of serious liver damage with kava supplements. Because of these risks, dietitians suggest avoiding kava if you have inflammation.

3/7

High-Dose Iron Supplements

Iron is important for your body, but too much iron can be harmful. Taking high doses of iron supplements can cause nausea, constipation, ulcers, and higher inflammation levels. Most adults only need 8 to 18 milligrams of iron daily, and going over 40 milligrams can be unsafe. Only take iron supplements if your doctor says you need them, especially if you have inflammation.

4/7

Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA)

CLA is an omega-6 fatty acid often used for weight loss. However, studies show that CLA can increase levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation in the body. This means CLA supplements might make inflammation worse, especially in people with normal or low inflammation.

5/7

High-Dose Vitamin A Supplements

Vitamin A is essential, but taking too much can cause problems. High doses of vitamin A supplements may raise CRP levels, indicating more inflammation. Adults should get 700 to 900 micrograms daily, and not exceed 3,000 micrograms. Some supplements have more than this, so be careful and talk to your doctor before taking vitamin A supplements.

6/7

Blue-Green Algae

Blue-green algae, including spirulina, is used for many health reasons like lowering blood pressure and boosting immunity. But if you have an autoimmune condition or inflammation, blue-green algae might stimulate your immune system too much, making inflammation worse. Experts recommend avoiding it if you have inflammatory or autoimmune diseases

7/7

Disturbed sleep

Inflammation can also cause your sleep to be disturbed, so make sure that you stay away from these supplements
