Have you ever wanted to know how healthy your brain is?

There are few simple tests that can help you determine how sharp your brain is. These exercises target various cognitive areas, including memory, attention, problem-solving, flexibility, and pattern recognition. Each step has its own unique way of stimulating the brain, helping reveal cognitive strengths and areas for improvement.

2/7

Step 1: Memory test – Word recall

Write down or read aloud a list of 20 random words (like apple, house, sky, msic, car, pencil, etc.). Spend one minute trying to memorize the list. After one minute, close your eyes and try to write down or recite as many words as you remember without looking. Focus on recalling the list in any order you remember.
Scoring:15–20 words: Excellent memory10–14 words: Good memory5–9 words: Moderate memory0–4 words: Needs improvement

3/7

Step 2: Attention test – Spot the odd one out

Create or find a 6x6 grid filled with similar items, such as 35 images of an apple and 1 image of a pear randomly placed within the grid. Look at the grid and spot the one image that differs as quickly as possible. This test challenges attention to detail, quick thinking, and visual processing, all essential for problem-solving and recognizing patterns.
Scoring:1–3 seconds: Excellent attention to detail4–6 seconds: Good attention7–10 seconds: Average attentionOver 10 seconds: Needs improvement

4/7

Step 3: Problem-solving test – Logical sequence

Create a sequence of numbers or letters with a hidden pattern, such as 2, 4, 6, 8, or A, C, E, G. Ask yourself what comes next in the sequence. To make it more challenging, try creating more complex sequences like 5, 10, 15, 25, 40, or B, D, H, J.
Scoring:Correctly identifying the pattern immediately: Excellent problem-solving abilityFinding the answer after a minute or two: Good reasoningNeeding hints to find the pattern: Needs improvement

5/7

Step 4: Flexibility test – Word association

Choose a word, such as “water,” and write down as many related words as possible within 30 seconds (for example ocean, river, rain, swim, etc.). Repeat with different words to test your flexibility in various categories. This test measures cognitive flexibility and creativity, which are crucial for adapting to new information and generating innovative ideas.
Scoring:15+ words: High flexibility and creativity10–14 words: Good flexibility5–9 words: Moderate flexibilityFewer than 5 words: Needs improvement

6/7

Step 5: Reaction test – Quick decision-making

Use an online reaction time test or simply set a timer and have a friend call out “Go!” at a random time within 10 seconds. When you hear the cue, press a button or respond as fast as possible. Record your response time.
Scoring:
Under 200 milliseconds: Extremely sharp reaction200–300 milliseconds: Good reaction time300–400 milliseconds: Average reactionOver 400 milliseconds: Needs improvement

7/7

How to assess the scores and improve brain health

Each of these steps evaluates a different aspect of mental sharpness. Here’s a summary of what your scores might indicate and how to boost your cognitive skills:
If your memory scores were low, try exercises like memorizing phone numbers, using mnemonics, or practicing visualization.
To improve attention, consider mindfulness exercises or puzzle games that require intense focus, such as jigsaw puzzles or crosswords.
Regularly engage in puzzles like Sudoku or brain teasers to enhance logical thinking.
Read creatively challenging content or play word association games to train your brain to think of diverse connections quickly.
Playing video games, especially action-based ones, can significantly improve reaction time and decision-making under pressure.
