5 longevity tips from 102-year-old yoga teacher Charlotte Chopin

Charlotte Chopin, a 102-year-old woman, has been teaching yoga in Léré, a village in France, since 1982. The Centenarian really does not make any claims of being a wellness guru; however, she shares her knowledge of yoga with thousands. Since starting yoga at 50, aging gracefully while staying active, moving with ease, and thriving well compared to her peers. Take a look at the woman’s longevity secrets.

Yoga for wellness

Chopin practices yoga every day. It’s not really a part of her fitness regime, but a part of her life. Yoga, which originated in ancient India, is a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices that has been proven to be beneficial for a healthy body and mind. Though she didn’t try yoga until she was 50, Charlotte Chopin hasn’t missed a single day of practice since then. In fact, her love for yoga even garnered its origin land, India. Last year, India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, awarded her a civilian honour for being an outstanding ambassador for yoga.

Eating the right food

One of the secrets behind Chopin’s longevity is her approach to food. She enjoys a sumptuous breakfast, which includes some coffee, toast with butter and honey or jam. She also revealed that she sometimes has ‘a spoonful of jelly by itself’. The delectable breakfast is followed by a nutritious lunch, which includes lots of vegetables. She enjoys eating vegetables, fruits, and cheese.

Walking is her favourite activity

Walking is one of Chopin’s favourite activities. She loves walking outside. Breathing in the fresh air and embracing nature further adds health benefits. Studies have consistently shown that walking is the key to a longer life. Physical activity of any kind is beneficial for health. Walking, being the simplest form of exercise, is crucial to longevity. A 2024 study by Griffith University researchers found that most active quarter of people (which is up to 25% of the American population) in the community had a 73 per cent lower risk of death than their least active counterparts. The study also found that if the least active quartile added a single one-hour walk, it can potentially add around six additional hours of life.

Social connection

At the age of 102, she continues to interact with people. In fact, she really values social relationships. Be it the people who approach her to practice yoga, or everyday conversations with her loved ones and friends, she thrives on connection. Studies have shown that socializing is linked to longevity. A 2023 study published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health found that frequent socializing may extend the lifespan of older people. The study of more than 28,000 Chinese people, showed that time to death was delayed by 42% in those who socialised occasionally, by 48% in those who did at least monthly, by 110% in those who did so at least weekly, and by 87% in those who did so nearly every day, compared with those who said they never socialised.

Maintaining meaningful relationships not only enhances emotional well-being but also contributes to better physical health, sharper cognitive function, and a stronger immune system. In the long run, staying socially active may be just as important as exercise and diet for healthy aging.

Strong social ties provide a sense of purpose, reduce feelings of loneliness, and have been linked to lower rates of depression and chronic illness, ultimately leading to a longer, more fulfilling life.

Finding joy in little things

Ms. Chopin's mantra for life is simple - finding joy in little things. A plaque on a cabinet in her living room reads, “Happiness is not about having everything you want, but loving what you have.” She enjoys the yoga practices she does and finds happiness in little things.

Her positive outlook, appreciation for the present moment, and ability to find contentment in everyday routines reflect a mindset linked to longevity and emotional resilience. Embracing gratitude and simplicity seems to be the quiet strength behind her long and fulfilling life.

Certainly, the tips by centurion Charlotte Chopin are very useful. Her age INSPIRE's others to follow her formula. She started at her fifty, it tells us it's never too late to start.. The yogas, Pranayam, light exercises, walking are key to fitness. Only thing is, one should maintain consistency. Life is very precious, one must take care to live to fullest. Dependency on artificial world should be reduced and nature loving and dependency should keep enhancing as we get elderly. She should be given wide publicity and must be ideal person for fitness.
