5 Foods that can prevent Stomach Cancer

Stomach cancer, which is also known as gastric cancer, develops in the stomach's lining, specifically in the mucus-producing cells. It is the fifth most commonly diagnosed cancer globally. Unfortunately, stomach cancer is usually diagnosed only in the later stages, when it has spread to the lymph nodes or other organs, post which the prognosis remains poor. (only 1 out of 5 patients will survive) However, apart from other factors (lifestyle, smoking, drinking, genetics etc), your diet too, plays a major role in getting cancer. While it is important to follow a healthy diet, there are some foods that too, can help prevent cancer. Here are 5 of them...

2/6

Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, grapefruits, and limes are rich in vitamin C and flavonoids. Vitamin C is a known antioxidant that helps neutralize harmful free radicals which can damage cells and lead to cancer. The Flavonoids present in these also stop cancer cells from spreading. Eating these regularly helps protect the lining of your stomach, and reduces the risk of cancer. Have them fresh or add lemon to your water for a refreshing detox drink.

3/6

Leafy and Cruciferous Vegetables

Vegetables such as spinach, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage contain important antioxidants like beta-carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E. These nutrients protect your stomach cells from damage and help prevent cancer. Cruciferous vegetables, such as cabbage also have special compounds called glucosinolates that support enzymes which stop cancer growth and repair damaged DNA. Eating these on a regular basis can lower your risk of stomach cancer.

4/6

Garlic and Onions

Garlic, onions, shallots, and leeks belong to the allium family and contain a compound called allicin. Allicin is known for its strong anti-cancer properties that help fight bacteria like Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), which is a major cause of stomach cancer. Regular consumption of garlic and onions can reduce inflammation in the stomach, and hence prevent the growth of cancer cells. You can add these to your cooking, or eat raw garlic or toasted for maximum benefits.

5/6

Whole Grains and Legumes

Whole grains like brown rice, whole wheat, oats, quinoa, millets, along with legumes such as lentils and beans (all dals, chole, rajma etc), are high in dietary fiber. Fiber helps keep your digestive system healthy by improving bowel movements and removing harmful substances. Studies show that eating more fiber can reduce the risk of stomach cancer by neutralizing cancer-causing chemicals in the gut. Whole grains and legumes also provide important vitamins and minerals that support overall health.

6/6

Green Tea

Green tea is well known for its health benefits, especially its high content of polyphenols like catechins. These natural antioxidants protect cells from damage and may slow down or prevent the development of cancer Drinking green tea regularly has been linked to a lower risk of stomach cancer, especially in populations with high rates of this disease. You can enjoy 2-3 cups of green tea daily as a healthy habit, provided you do not add any extra sugar to it (not even jaggery)
