5 early symptoms of Colon Cancer that can be easily ignored

Colon cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, is a type of cancer that develops in the colon or rectum, the last part of the large intestine. It often starts as small, noncancerous clumps of cells called polyps that can, over time, become cancerous. Most colon cancers occur randomly, without any major pre risks, though family history, obesity, and lifestyle can increase one's risk. Most cases occur post 50, and early symptoms can be mild at best, often mistaken for digestive issues and stomach infections. However, there are some warning signs that must not be ignored. Here are 5 early symptoms of colon cancer that are easy to miss...

2/15

Changing bowel habits

One of the earliest signs of colon cancer is a noticeable change in bowel habits. This can include:

More frequent diarrhea or constipation

Alternating between diarrhea and constipation

Stools that are narrower or thinner than usual

These changes might seem minor or temporary. Many people blame them on diet, stress, a diet change, or infections. But if these bowel changes last more than a few days or keep coming back, it could be a warning sign of colon cancer. Persistent changes mean the colon might be affected by a growing tumor that disrupts normal bowel movements, and hence these changes.

3/15

Blood in stool

Blood in stool should never be ignored, whether or not it is colon cancer. The same can appear is

Bright red blood on the surface of the stool or toilet paper

Dark or black, tarry stools indicating older blood

Sometimes, the bleeding is so small that it is not visible to the naked eye but can cause anemia over time. Blood in the stool can be caused by many conditions, such as hemorrhoids or infections, but it is crucial to rule out colon cancer, especially if it happens repeatedly or is accompanied by other symptoms.

4/15

Abdominal Discomfort or Pain

Persistent abdominal discomfort is another early symptom that people often ignore. This may include:

Cramps or gas pains

Bloating or a feeling of fullness

General belly pain that does not go away

Such discomfort can be mistaken for indigestion or other minor digestive issues, such as constipation. However, if the pain is ongoing and unrelated to diet or lifestyle changes, it could indicate a tumor causing irritation or blockage in the colon.

5/15

Fatigue and Weakness

Feeling unusually tired or weak without a clear reason can be a subtle sign of colon cancer. (but only if accompanied by other factors) This happens because slow, unnoticed bleeding in the colon can lead to iron deficiency anemia. When the body has fewer red blood cells, it cannot carry enough oxygen, resulting in fatigue, shortness of breath, and weakness. These symptoms may be dismissed as stress or lack of sleep, but should be checked out anyway.

6/15

Rapid weight loss

Losing weight without trying is a common symptom in most cancers, including colon cancer. When the body is fighting cancer, the immune system is constantly on overdrive, and tumors can affect digestion and appetite. If you notice significant weight loss without changes in diet or exercise, it is important to see a doctor. This symptom often appears later, but can sometimes be an early warning sign as well.

How does cancer diagnosis affect a person mentally?

A cancer diagnosis profoundly impacts a person mentally, often triggering a cascade of intense emotions. Initially, shock, disbelief, and a sense of overwhelm are common, as individuals grapple with the life-altering news and the uncertainty of their future. This can quickly evolve into significant fear and anxiety about treatment, potential pain, side effects, body image changes, financial burdens, and ultimately, mortality.
