5 early signs of Liver Disease that are easily ignored

Liver disease encompasses a lot of conditions, but essentially includes all ailments that impair the liver's ability to function properly. It can be caused by genetics, viruses, lifestyle (poor diet, alcohol) and even obesity. The condition in itself does not cause early symptoms, which can make detection difficult. However, there are some subtle signs one should not miss. Here are 5 early signs of liver disease that people often ignore...

2/8

Chronic fatigue

Feeling tired even after a full night's rest, day after day? One of the most common early signs of liver disease is constant tiredness or fatigue. When the liver is not working well, it cannot properly filter toxins from your blood. This buildup of toxins makes you feel weak and exhausted, even if you have had enough rest. This fatigue is not your usual everyday tiredness, and is constant, meaning you feel it all the time.

3/8

Loss of Appetite

Many people with early liver problems don’t feel hungry or are constantly nauseous. The liver plays an important role in digestion and metabolism. When it is damaged, it affects how your body processes food, leading to a loss of appetite. You may also feel sick after eating or have a runny stomach. These symptoms are subtle but important early warnings.

4/8

Abdominal Pain or Discomfort

Pain or discomfort in the upper right side of your belly, just below the ribs, can be an early sign of liver disease. This is where the liver is located. The pain might feel like a dull ache or soreness and can come and go and last months as well. Sometimes it worsens when you breathe deeply or move around. This symptom is often ignored because it can be mild or mistaken for other stomach problems, such as indigestion.

5/8

Itchy Skin

Another early but often overlooked sign, is itchy skin. When the liver is damaged, bile salts can build up in the bloodstream and irritate the nerves in your skin. This causes persistent itching that is not related to allergies or dry skin. Itching from liver problems usually affects the whole body and can be very uncomfortable. If you find yourself constantly itching even after applying lotions, then it could be a warning sign.

6/8

Swelling in Legs and Ankles

Swelling or puffiness in the legs and ankles is a sign that your liver may not be working properly. (though this can also be indicative of many other conditions) The liver produces proteins that help keep fluid in your blood vessels. When it is damaged, fluid leaks into surrounding tissues, causing swelling (called edema). This swelling is often painless but noticeable, especially after standing or sitting for a long time.

7/8

Why These Signs Are Often Ignored

Early liver disease symptoms are vague and can easily be mistaken for other common health problems like tiredness stomach upset, or skin irritation. Because the liver has a great ability to repair itself, symptoms may come and go, often over months, making people less likely to take any action on them. However, ignoring these signs can be dangerous. Liver disease may progress silently to serious conditions such as cirrhosis (scarring of the liver), liver failure, or even liver cancer.
