5 early signs and symptoms of Cervical Cancer that can go unnoticed

Cervical cancer is a malignant growth of cells that starts in the cervix. The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. The Cancer is primarily caused by persistent infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection. While most HPV infections resolve on their own with time, persistent infection with high-risk HPV strains can lead to cervical cancer. Like it is with all cancers, Cervical Cancer too is highly treatable, if detected early. However, the cancer progresses slowly, hence there are some signs and symptoms that are easy to miss. Here are 5 early signs of Cervical Cancer that can go unnoticed...

2/7

Vaginal Bleeding that is uncommon

One of the earliest warning signs of cervical cancer is abnormal vaginal bleeding. This can occur as:

Bleeding between your regular menstrual periods

Bleeding after sexual intercourse

Bleeding after menopause

Having heavier or longer menstrual periods than usual

Because many women experience irregular bleeding for various reasons, this symptom is often ignored or attributed to hormonal changes or infections. However, if you notice bleeding that is different from your normal pattern, it’s important to get it checked. (even if it not cancer)

3/7

Changes in vaginal discharge

A small amount of vaginal discharge is quite common in women, and especially around ovulation. However, if there are changes to it, then it is a cause for concern. Normally, vaginal discharge varies in amount and texture during the menstrual cycle, but cervical cancer can cause discharge that is:

Thick or watery

Has a strong or unpleasant odor

Contains blood or appears tinged with blood

This discharge may occur between periods or after menopause. Many women may dismiss this as a sign of infection or irritation, but it is importan to get it checked out.

4/7

Pain During Sexual Intercourse

Pain or discomfort during sex is a symptom that can be caused by many conditions, including infections or hormonal changes. However, it can also be an early sign of cervical cancer. This pain may feel like:

Sharp or stabbing pain during penetration

A deep ache or pressure in the pelvic area during or after sex

Because this symptom is too private to discuss, most women don't report to a doctor. But persistent pain during intercourse is never normal, and should always be evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out serious causes, including cervical cancer.

5/7

Lower Back or Pelvic Pain

Mild pain in the lower back or pelvic region can be caused by many common issues such as muscle strain or menstrual cramps. However, persistent or unexplained pain in these areas may be an early sign of cervical cancer, especially if it is accompanied by other symptoms like abnormal bleeding or discharge.

This pain is often described as a dull ache or pressure between the hip bones or in the lower tummy. Because it is such a common symptom, it is frequently overlooked or attributed to less serious causes. If you experienc pelvic or lower back pain that doesn’t improve with home remedies, it’s important to get it checked.

6/7

Frequent or Painful Urination

Early cervical cancer can affect the nearby tissues, including the bladder and urinary tract. This may cause symptoms such as:

A frequent need to urinate

Pain or burning sensation while urinating

Difficulty emptying the bladder fully

These symptoms are often mistaken for urinary tract infections (UTIs), which are common in women. However, if urinary symptoms persist despite treatment, they should be evaluated carefully to rule out cervical cancer.

7/7

Vaccine and early detection is key

The key to early detection is awareness and regular health checkups. This apart, the HPV vaccine protects against HPV types that cause cervical, vaginal, vulvar, penile, anal, and oropharyngeal cancers, as well as genital warts. For women, the vaccine can be taken as early as 11 or 12 years of age till the age of 45 (check with your doctor first)
