4 essential supplements for PCOS weight loss, according to a top American dietitian

Losing weight is no easy task, and when it is paired with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the struggle gets even worse. Women with PCOS face difficulties with weight management, inflammation, and hormonal imbalances. Tallene Hacatoryan, a registered dietitian based in Orange County, California, has explained about 4 supplements that may help in the weight loss process. Hacatoryan, who herself has battled PCOS, and lost 30 pounds, says, “No one supplement is a magic fix for PCOS. The real game-changer? Combining the right supplements with sustainable lifestyle changes, balanced nutrition, and movement that supports your hormones.” Take a look.

Omega-3 fish oil

The supplement that tops her list is Omega-3. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil, are known to boost metabolism and support hormonal health. This supplement also helps with weight loss, according to Hacatoryan. “Studies show that women who took omega-3 for three months increased their metabolic rate by 14 percent. That means you're burning 200 extra calories a day,” the dietitian said, in a video shared on Instagram. Some studies show that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids of marine origin (n-3 PUFAs), which are known for their hypotriglyceridemic, cardioprotective and anti-inflammatory effects, may help in prevention and reversal of metabolic complications in PCOS. n-3 PUFAs reduce serum triglycerides and improve insulin resistance and inflammation in women with PCOS.

CoQ10

Coenzyme Q10 is next on her list. It is a naturally occurring biochemical cofactor (coenzyme) and an antioxidant produced by the human body. According to the dietitian, supplementation with CoQ10 may boost metabolism. “Studies show that women with PCOS who took CoQ10 for three months had a significant improvement in their insulin, glucose, and metabolism,” she said.

Curcumin

Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. The dietitian notes that a curcumin supplement may help reduce inflammation and aid weight loss. “Studies show that it helps with inflammation and insulin resistance, which is great for weight loss, metabolism, and bloating,” she said.

Multivitamin

A good quality multivitamin is essential for weight loss in women with PCOS. “A multivitamin because we women with PCOS struggle with chronic inflammation, which leads to nutrient deficiencies in essential nutrients like vitamin D, zinc, and magnesium,” she said. A healthy lifestyle incorporating a well-balanced and nutritious diet, paired with regular exercise, and good quality sleep (7-9 hours) every night is crucial for weight loss.
