3 simple habits to keep the brain young, according to a top neurosurgeon

We are all chasing youthfulness, especially as we grow older. But this quest for youthfulness is often limited to physical appearances. However, what you need to really focus on is keeping your brain healthy. It is important to keep the brain sharp in order to keep conditions such as dementia at bay.

Dementia is the leading cause of disability and dependency among older adults globally. In 2021, about 57 million people had dementia, and there is a sharp increase of nearly 10 million new cases every year. But how does one keep the brain young? Dr. Prashant Katakol, a leading neurosurgeon based in Bangalore, India, has now shared three simple habits that will help you keep the brain young. “Small, daily habits make lifelong impact,” the doctor says. Use it or lose it

Yes, you read that right. If you want to keep your brain healthy, sharp, and young, use it. Dr Katokol stresses that one needs to challenge the brain constantly, to keep it young. “Your brain thrives on challenges. So learn a new skill every day. Solve a puzzle or take a different route to walk on a daily basis,” the doctor says, in a video shared on Instagram. Studies have shown that playing crossword puzzles regularly delays memory decline by two and a half years. You can also play Sudoku, or similar mind-stimulating games.

Breathe as your life depends on it

Yes, breathing exercises are crucial for keeping your brain healthy. Consider it as a mental rejuvenation. “I teach my patients a simple yogic breathing exercise. You sit in a comfortable position, focus between your eyebrows, take in breath for four counts, hold your breath for four counts, and breathe out for four counts. Calming your mind makes it younger,” he suggests. Mindfulness practices such as meditation or yoga can also help you in this.

Build a circle

Contrary to what this era of individualism and isolation has taught you, your brain loves connections. Isolation, on the other hand, kills it. So find time to connect with people. These simple measures will not only improve your mood but also boost your brain function. “Build your circle and not just your muscle. Isolation hurts the brain as much as bad food does. So call a friend, join a group, keep laughing together,” the doctor says. Keep aside some time in your daily routine to talk to your friend, or engage in a group activity such as a reading club to foster connections.

Simple steps matter

You don’t need expensive medications, supplements, or treatments to boost your brain function. Keeping your brain in top shape does not mean emptying your bank account. Simple everyday activities can have a huge impact. The key is to practice it every day. Consistency is crucial. “Everyday small steps to keep your mind engaged, to keep your breathing under control, and to keep your friendships, are my prescriptions for a young brain,” the neurosurgeon says.
