What is choking?

Choking happens when there is an obstruction in the throat or windpipe. This blocks the flow of air and is life threatening in nature as it cuts off the flow of oxygen to the brain.

Most adults and young children choke on food particles.

Choking is also known as FBAO or food body airway construction.

How do you know if someone is choking?

When the person around you, especially when you are having food together, suddenly finds it difficult to breathe then you need to act smart and understand that he or she has choked over food.

The person may gasp for breath, get motionless after a few seconds, will have noisy breathing and may turn pale. The person can't speak, cough or breathe due to choking.

If you see someone lying unconscious, then do not rule out the chances of choking.

4/6

What to do if someone has choked?

Abdominal thrusts or Heimlich maneuver should be done when the person is choking.

Here you have to bend over the person's waist and give strikes or blows with your hand between the shoulder blades of the person. This should be enough to throw out the choked food from the system.

5/6

Here's what you should not do to someone who is choking?

Do not ask them about anything. You might be putting extra burden on them to answer your queries when they are in a critical situation

Be gentle while doing Heimlich maneuver, giving big thrusts can break the ribs

Do not put your fingers in the person's mouth

Do not turn the child upside down when they have choked

6/6

What are the common objects of choking?

There is no such food or object with which only people get choked. Choking can happen due to careless eating, not chewing food properly or trying to eat fast.

Usually kids choke on candies, erasers, small toys, big chunks of fruits, cherry tomatoes, whole grapes, peanuts and many other small, round shaped objects which easily fit in their mouth.
