Stress

Physical and emotional stress can take a toll on the body. We all know that, but many of us are unaware of the long term impact stress has on major systems of the body including the blood sugar level.

The blood sugar level in the body can spike due to all kinds of stress. You can also see a pattern in the blood sugar level as per your stress and discuss it with your doctor or physician for a remedy.

Type 2 diabetes: Signs you have borderline diabetes and how to prevent it from progressing

2/10

Artificial sweeteners

Our knowledge about eradicating diabetes is that the less sugar we eat the better control we have on our blood sugar level regardless of what alternative we are using for sugar.

Many diabetics consume artificial sweeteners as an alternative to regular sugar.

However, this can be another reason why your blood sugar level rises.

3/10

Lack of sleep

We neglect sleep. We feel our body can handle itself with less hours of sleep. We put our body to test and push it outside of its limits to function even after depriving of sleep.

Lack of sleep disturbs the body's ability to use insulin properly and hence disrupts the normal blood sugar level.

4/10

Skipping breakfast

Going to bed late at night, waking up late in the morning and then rushing through the chores to get ready for the office-- this has become a part and parcel of our life.

However, it is important to note that skipping breakfast in the morning can increase blood sugar after lunch and dinner. It is important to eat something within an hour of waking up in the morning.

5/10

Dehydration

This is a lesser known fact about blood sugar spike.

Dehydration or lack of proper hydration in the body can put it at greater risks one of which is diabetes. Less water in the body is an indication that the blood sugar is more concentrated.

6/10

Lack of exercises

It is needless to mention the importance of physical activities like brisk walking, cycling, running and jogging for the overall health of the body. The American Diabetes Association recommends 150 minutes of weekly physical activity as part of a lifestyle change to avoid type 2 diabetes. The exercise can be of moderate- to vigorous-intensity.

7/10

Less fibre in the food

A diet rich in fats and carbohydrates is a clear pathway to obesity. The quality and wholesomeness of a diet significantly affects the blood sugar level.

Several studies have found that fiber rich foods like vegetables, seeds, nuts, whole grains, white meat, fruits protect against type 2 diabetes.

8/10

Smoking and alcohol consumption

Among all the havocs these two injurious habits have on human health, the spike in blood sugar level is number one.

Cigarette smoking and heavy alcohol consumption are one of the top reasons for the onset of type 2 diabetes in young people.

Though regular drinking habits are said to have minimal adverse effects on human health, binge drinking takes a toll on the overall health. One should limit the number of drinks and the number of cigarettes to as minimum as possible.
9/10

Incorrect medications

Wrong dosage of medications can alter the blood sugar level and cause diabetes.

It is very important to update your doctor about other health conditions that you have along with the medications you are currently taking for that health complication.

Sometimes medications mix with each other and react within the body.
10/10

Hormonal changes

Hormonal fluctuations can make the blood sugar rise.

In women, the menstrual cycle can also spike the blood sugar level. Estrogen directly affects the insulin sensitivity which means the lower your estrogen levels are, the more insulin resistant you tend to become. Hence during menopause women can have blood sugar imbalance in the body.
